In 71 countries, being queer makes you a criminal. In 11 of them, the punishment is death. Some countries differentiate between having gay sex and actually being gay, but the result is discrimination no matter the reasoning.
Americas religious right is clamoring for crackdowns on gender expression and LGBTQ rights similar to the laws enforced in less advanced countries. Some prominent Republicans and pastors have gone so far as to suggest America should be a theocracy like some countries on the list.

(8,264 posts)Despite gains made in many parts of the world, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people are, in some regions, increasingly persecuted and denied basic human rights. Because bigotry thrives where we are silenced by fear, we've created this space for people to share stories of discrimination and survival. Read these stories, share them, and contribute your own. Let the world know that we will not be silent.

(52,164 posts)which admittedly is no big deal in the US, but is literally 2nd to only the Olympics in much of the world. A scary reminder of how far we have to go still. And this understates the problem to some extent since some notoriously anti gay countries aren't even on this list as they haven't technically made being gay illegal. (China, Russia, India for example)
This was my first thought when I was reading through the list in the o.p. I mean, it's certainly better if being lgbtq isn't literally a crime, but that's only part of the story.
An important part, yes; but just a part.
