https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/the-most-unexpected-consequence-of-the-texas-abortion-ban/ar-AAWy47R**long article about women's rush to make the shortened window for abortion. Peeing on a pregnancy stick every day. Feeling they dont have enough time to make a decision. Deer in headlights look when told they now have to travel to another state. ***
really sad and scary for women
--------------
It takes about five weeks for the first glimmer of a pregnancy, a gestational sac, to show up on a uterine ultrasound. About seven days after that, fetal cardiac cells begin moving in unison, at which point clinics like Houston Womens Reproductive Services are no longer permitted to terminate the pregnancy. The week in between these two milestones is a precious, fast-closing window that patients can easily miss.
The timing is made even trickier by another Texas law that requires each patient to see the same doctor for two separate appointments, scheduled at least 24 hours apart, before terminating her pregnancy.
The average patient used to come to the office around the seventh or eighth week of pregnancy. Now, many patients are coming in so early that their pregnancies are undetectable by the ultrasound machine, even if their pregnancy tests come back positive. They are often distraught when told to return in a week for another ultrasound, especially if their work and family obligations would prevent them from traveling out of state if they miss their chance in Texas.
Women are peeing on sticks every day, said Catalina Leaño, 51, the lead nurse at Houston Womens Reproductive Services. People are coming in in chaos and desperation, with this anxiety that youre either too early or youre too late.

(102,310 posts)women, denying their right to their own bodies-- and I have to wonder whether big business is going to find locating/relocating operations in such states sustainable for long.
But if I were a woman living in states dehumanizing women, like Texas-- since they have criminalized the consequences of sex-- then I'd sure as hell share the pain. If that means ending certain activities many men have all but made their reason for living, well tough. Enjoy your "self-love" if you won't stand up for the women in your state, in your life.
Men who won't stand up for women in these states and join together to rid the state government of these hateful cretins are not worth it either. And gay men who don't stand up for women are only going to find that, unlike in the past, those women are nowhere to be found when increasing homophobia and hate-filled policy is directed toward THEm. Even those who want to help will have no voice remaining. First, they came for... (Martin Niemöller: "First they came for the socialists..." )

(10,195 posts)You had to travel to another state to get the abortion because most states did not have clinics and doctors and hospitals refused to provide the service. And each place had their own rules on how many weeks along you could be.
And why are doctors and hospitals allowed to deny women abortion services anyway? If your manliness needs a kick start you can visit your doctor and they either send you to a specialist or write you a prescription....no clinic involved. Why are only women's reproductive healthcare needs treated like a weird little abnormality that regular doctors and hospitals can't touch?
We are moving backwards in time where blatant misogyny, sexism and abuse were the norm.

(16,983 posts)Please vote for your best self-interest. No one is going to do it for us. And if r's keep getting elected, the nightmare will continue. The only way we can beat these bullies is to get them the hell out of office. Less thank 20% of voters condone these laws. According to PEW Research, about 2% of Americans ever run for public office, so way less than 1% of elected officials are passing legislation against woman, voting and rights. Let's DUMP them!

(5,499 posts)I think there are a lot of people who go with the flow (the flow being the vocal minority) because they don't want to be adversely labeled or even targeted.
I think more people need to speak out about the benefits of living in a society where abortion is accessible and safe. Medical procedures of any kind should not be debated or regulated by a bunch of professional politicians. Could you imagine if a law was passed that prevented gall bladder removal? Or if transplants were banned?
I think Roe will be completely overturned here in a couple of months. I would like to think this will serve as a call to action that will generate great outrage and support. But sadly I think people will avert their eyes and move on. That seems to be the American way.

(15,944 posts)Texans didn't get a say in the matter.
If this subject had been voted on by the majority that would be a different outcome 😉
Thx for your input.

(5,499 posts)Maybe they didn't realize how far they would go. Do we think there will be a backlash by the voters?
My point was that people (in this case Texans) would rather stay silent on issues like abortion than risk being judged by their neighbors. Maybe in much the same way that racism continues to go unchecked.

These red states are going to drive themselves to bankruptcy in 10-15 years.
I hope they enjoy paying taxes.
Driving those RED States into further economic collapse as each extra child adds over $320K in costs
You can't put a price on life, actually you can. Every extra birth, above the stasis drives up taxes.
Between education, childcare, medical costs, food supplements, those who can afford to get abortions will, which places the lion's share of births on lower-income families that will have a higher demand for public assistance.
All of those tax-saving fiscal conservatives will do is drive up their local and state property taxes and put their hand out for more federal socialism. Rick Perry tried this shit years ago and in less than one year over 7,000 extra births resulted. It was so bad, he abandoned it. Imagine the simple compounding of just 10,000 extra births each and every year at a cost of $320K per kid over 18 years. This applies to average states, not low-education states like Idaho that pay around $8K per child for education and produde equally poor performers.
Example: 10K kids per year for 18 years will add $3.2 billion to the state tax requirements.
Year 1) 10000 x $12,000/year (birthing, food, heat, utilities, medical costs, daycare, etc.) = $120,000,000 increased taxes
Year 2) Now 20,000 x $12,000/year = $240M
Year 3) Now 30,000 x 12,000/year = $360M
Year 4) $360M + (10000 x $18000/year) (as education starts to kick in) = $360M + $180M = $540M
Continue compounding $180M each year until the oldest kids become emancipated.
And the above example is in 2019 numbers, not adjusted for costs and inflation.

(1,287 posts)They know perfectly well what their legislature and Governor wants to do.
They have been chipping away for years now at rights that those of us in blue states enjoy.
This is not a surprise.
It is what they want.
Im so over caring what these red states do.
I do not expect Texans to have an epiphany and vote any of these people out because they love these kind of laws.
