Dollar Tree Manager fired for sign:"Don't hire Gen Z's. They don't know what work actually means."

A Dollar Tree manager in Bremen, Indiana was fired from their job after posting a controversial sign outside of the store last week, according to NBC affiliate WNDU.

The handwritten sign had been seen by a number of people entering the store, allowing them to take pictures of it and post them online.

"I apologize for us closing AGAIN," the sign said. "My 2 new cashiers quit because I said their boyfriends couldn't stand here for their entire shift.

"Don’t hire Gen Z’s. They don’t know what work actually means. NOW HIRING! *Baby Boomers ONLY, thanks!"

According to the Pew Research Center, someone born between 1997 and 2012 is considered in Generation Z, while a person born between 1946 and 1964 is considered part of the Baby Boomer generation."

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/dollar-tree-manager-fired-after-posting-controversial-sign-outside-store/ar-AAWABiG

"We are aware that an unauthorized sign was posted at our store for a brief period of time. The handwritten message was absolutely not approved by or condoned by our Company," Guiler said in a statement.

This was definitely not something that would conform to corporate HR policy.
Becoming a manager of a dollar store does not require a great deal of business savvy.
This local store manager is proving that.
Besides this store manager is unaware that a third of Gen Zers wouldn't even be working yet. Corporate HR knows that.
The manager is a buffoon, and nothing more sinister needs to be inferred.

My family or friends would stop by to visit or have lunch, or just say hi. But there would have been issues with them staying all day with the employee, esp in employee-only areas.

That's just weird and inappropriate. So is the sign.

Manager is probably "salaried" and short staffed. Imo, short staffing is abusive. It was at my old job

My newest bridge partner thinks that way too.

I don't like to get into conflicts at bridge, so I
just kept silent, and the subject dropped like lead.

I think she got the message.

I had another partner a few years ago who would
go on and on about bigotry toward Hispanics
and also work. I finally said enough and left the
table, and we were never partners again.

A laid-off person over 50 without specialized skills couldn't get a response from HR.

If that store really wants to hire boomers as cashiers, they better put some stools behind the counter, have generous break schedules, and pay at least $15 per hour.

Yeah, that will work out...

I have had to deal with three Gen Z employees. They were all college students, one a senior graduating this term. None knew how to operate a copy machine (actually one knew how to make a copy but not how to make multiple copies). All just wanted to sit at the front desk looking at their personal ipads rather than going around the building to check out what needed to be done.

Conscientious kids who are bright, funny, and eager to please. Also all college students. All work without sulervision. They just needed to be trained and know my expectations for them. I treat them with respect, and they thrive.

Why would they know how to run a copier? None of us did until we were taught at a job.

Kids today work harder, have less, owe more, and will retire with less than the previous generations.

Always cracks me up to hear previous generations pretend they had it so hard. I was there, we goofed off through high school, through college, and into our first jobs. Kids today are much more serious and have much less time for goofing off.

And I gotta say that this is one of my pet peeves: pitting generation against generation.

When I was a teenager in the 1970s, all we heard was that our schools were substandard, we didn't want to do anything but be hippies & smoke pot, we didn't know how to work, wanted everything just handed to us, and so on. And now we're doing it to our children and grandchildren.

Younger people use the saying "okay, boomer" to make us feel stupid, marginalized, not "with it," and so on.

Everyone doing that is wrong. The young people that I talk to are wonderfully polite, knowledgeable about things, and a pleasure to be around. I don't know if that because it's how I treat them or if they are like that with everyone. I prefer to think it's because that's how they are.

I've read that people don't quit jobs, they quit managers. Actually, they do both. That manager forced those cashiers to leave - s/he proved that by putting up that sign. The reality of the situation is that this was most likely the first job the cashiers ever had, which means that they needed to be taught how to work in a professional setting. That is the job of the manager. This whole thing just sounds like the manager was the one who didn't know how to do the job.

how can they still call themselves Dollar Tree when they've raised the prices from $1.00 to $1.25 on what used to be strictly $1.00? I rarely go in one, but I do buy toothpaste there about three times a year. It was always $1.00 a tube. I'd buy 12 tubes at a time. Yesterday I had to restock and it was now $1.25.
