College Applicants Are Avoiding Schools in Anti-Abortion and Anti-Trans States

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/college-applicants-are-avoiding-schools-in-anti-abortion-and-anti-trans-states/ar-AAWzZhW?li=BBnb7Kz

Prospective college students once interested in schools in states like Texas and Florida are now scratching those options off their lists, college counselors across the country told Politico in a recent series of interviews.

“Students have told me, ‘I really want to go to Texas [the University of Texas at Austin], but I’m taking them off my list,’” college admissions consultant Christina Taber-Kewene told Politico. Taber-Kewene is based in New Jersey and primarily works with students living in the Northeast. “They’ll say, ‘I don’t want to go to school in a state where I won’t have reproductive rights access.’” She added that some students have told her they “don’t want to send money to a state” that’s banning abortion.

Well, if I had money to spend, I'd avoid spending it in those states too

Unless you're just wanting to live in an increasingly backwards authoritarian enclave.

supply of female and trans mistresses dries up! Expect more domestic abuse and violence, or wrecked marriages from weekend "golfing" jaunts.

Seriously. Someone cued me into that insight once. I didn't quite believe them at the time.

to start up in a state where the legislature is batshit crazy. Who wants a bunch of lunatics making laws where you will operate your business? How can you thrive in such an atmosphere?

Prochoice states should proclaim their favorable business environment, investing in infrastructure and making sure that the people they hire will be in a healthy, supportive environment.

Education goes right alongside health concerns. Teachers free to teach the truth. Having the educational needs of their population met, without constant strife over personal lifestyles and private lives.

It may take some time and some suffering brought on by crazy lawmakers but in the end a strong, educated, healthy workforce is what business wants!

UT Austin has an enrollment of 50K students. Many students apply every year from within Texas and are unable to gain admission to the flagship university because of the 10% rule in Texas, which requires public universities to automatically admit all students in the top 10% of their graduating class. UT now only takes I think the top 6% because they have so many student automatically admitted under that rule, and STILL have so many freshman who want to attend and can't get in because there's no space.

Especially to programs in states that are racially gerrymandering and making it harder for minorities to vote.

The greater the talent, the better it would be if said athlete holds a press conference to make his or her matriculation decision and to say why he or she would never play in a state that promotes discrimination. Multiple blue-chip recruits need to make this statement every year, announcing their intent to not attend schools in, say, Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

Make fans in these states squeal because blue-chip players won't attend school at Big State U. Make them cry when their favorite Big State U football or basketball program falls from greatness.

Racism has consequences.

Living in a red state as an academician I predicted this. We are also finding it difficult to recruit faculty and staff from outside the State. I expect that following the loss of applicants we will see current faculty move away. The brain drain begins.
