.... Mastodon is not a single website like Twitter but a network of users in independent communities that can set up their own guidelines.
Although its appearance is similar to Twitter, the decentralised social network actually has more in common with Discord, in that users have to find specific Mastodon instances to join. ....
The network has a 500-character limit on 'toots' its version of tweets and allows users to set posts to private, which Twitter does not. ....
The company is registered as a non-profit and development is supported entirely by donations, meaning there is no advertising. ....

(1,789 posts)...and then tried to hide it. That didn't work too well because all one had to do was use the "code inspection" feature of any web browser to see the many references to Mastodon. Whoops. Truth Social finally published their modifications to the code after being threatened with infringment lawsuits (or should I say, LOLsuits).
Mastodon and similar alternatives like Lemmy are being used by a lot of left-wing groups who got kicked off Reddit in the latest round of purges.

(1,789 posts)There were a handful, not a huge number. The fash purge was much larger, and needed, as they were actually becoming dangerous, particularly the fash incel subs. Anyway, I think most if not all of those left-wing former Reddit subs are using either Mastodon or Lemmy, and most also have Discord groups (which are not open-source).

(1,789 posts)Drumpf claimed it was all proprietary code, which was easily shown to be a lie simply by using the "code inspection" part of a web browser. The open-source licenses are very clear that the use of open-source code has to be divulged, and any improvements or modifications must be shared. Truth Social now has a link on their site for this after they were threatened with lawsuits. Open source =/= "free".

(2,193 posts)Regardless, Mastadon is FOSS (free is literally the first word of the acronym) so I still dont know if non-compliance in terms of sharing code modifications and/or acknowledging use is tantamount to stealing. Probably a distinction without much of a difference

(1,789 posts)...the use of open-source code, including where to find the code modifications (usually a website). Companies like Samsung wouldn't do that if there weren't penalties. Drumpf got into hot water within days when he took the Mastodon code without attribution.
"Stealing" is probably better thought of as plagiarism in these cases. Nonetheless, everyone referred to Drumpf as a thief, because that's what he is.

So, no. It does sound interesting in an academic sense.
