PoliticoA Bernie Sanders-aligned group is throwing its weight behind underdog Tom Nelson in Wisconsins closely watched Democratic Senate primary.
The endorsement from Our Wisconsin Revolution, which was first shared with POLITICO, gives a much-needed adrenaline shot to Nelsons campaign and could help validate his claim that he is the true progressive in the race.
The nod is a sign that Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, the Democratic frontrunner who is also running as a liberal, faces dissatisfaction from some progressive activists as he distances himself from the far left in advance of the general election. Sunrise Wisconsin, a left-wing organization of young people aiming to stop climate change, endorsed Nelson over Barnes as well.
He has a strong stance on Medicare for All, said Andre Walton, executive director of Our Wisconsin Revolution, of Nelson. He is a very staunch ally for the labor movement, and his stance on environmental policy is extremely strong. He believes in the Green New Deal.

Nelson is in low single digits in WI-SEN-D polling.

(58,785 posts)1. Liberal Democrat Mandela Barnes leads at 19% in a 4-candidate race,
even though he hasn't started his TV spots and others have. Lasry, a former NYer, is the son of a billionaire and able to self fund.
45% are still undecided, with election not until August. Democrat Alex Lasry's second at 16%, with whoever the winner is going up against Republican incumbent Senator Ron Johnson in the fall. Expect the usual big promotion by hostile operatives in splinter candidates.

(112,384 posts)2. He has a long way to go.
The rest of the field remains in the single digits. Secretary of state Sarah Godlewski polled at 7%, up from 3% last month, and Outagamie County executive Tom Nelson remains unchanged at 5%. All other Democratic candidates polled at 1% or less.
