so a similar formulation from Putin as from Stalin gives the similar root:
путь = way in the sense of path, route, road, pathway, etc.
I don't know if there is anything linguisticly backing the above analysis, but Putin is a family name whereas Stalin adopted his name for propaganda purposes.
