NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Naomi Judd, the Kentucky-born singer of the Grammy-winning duo The Judds and mother of Wynonna and Ashley Judd, has died. She was 76.
The daughters announced her death on Saturday in a statement provided to The Associated Press.
Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness, the statement said. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory. The statement did not elaborate further.
The Judds were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday and they had just announced an arena tour to begin in the fall, their first tour together in over a decade. They also made a return to awards shows when they performed at the CMT Music Awards earlier this month.

(4,575 posts)I know that she had Hep C. She talked about it. I wonder if she had been physically ill and it was too much for her to bear. How sad.
Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)Most death notices (releases or obituaries) won't ever claim suicide outright and use this type of language (or is no longer in pain).
So sad.

(63,221 posts)They said they lost her to the "disease of mental illness". I am wondering if she took her own life and if so, that must make it so much harder on Wynonna and Ashley, especially right before they were about to accept such a great honor as a family.
Rest in Peace, Naomi.

(16,866 posts)It's pretty clear from their story that Naomi had struggled with mental health issues for decades. The way those girls were treated in the drive for Naomi to "succeed" is a terrible and sad story, particularly Ashley. I hope that Naomi has found peace from her demons.

(2,113 posts)I also knew of the issues in her & Wynona's relationship but found that completely understandable. (I would have been more surprised if there weren't issues, considering their constant, extended physical proximity to each other.) But I was completely unaware of circumstances related to your statement: "The way those girls were treated in the drive for Naomi to "succeed" is a terrible and sad story, particularly Ashley." Was that in her book? What happened?

(16,866 posts)Naomi had a lifelong dream of being "famous". She was notorious for telling outright lies about their lives in interviews and the girls were expected to just go along with whatever story she happened to tell.
Naomi frequently told Ashley she was an accident and a "foam baby". She was often treated as an afterthought. At one point, Naomi took a then 14 yo Wynonna to a Merle Haggard concert, leaving Ashley at home by herself. After the show and an interaction with Haggard, Naomi decides to join the tour bus with Wynonna leaving Ashley home, alone, for several days.
Both girls autobiographies are pretty well done and go into much more detail about how hectic and crazy their worlds were as children. I'd recommend both if you're a fan of the Judds

(2,113 posts)I am a big fan, always have been. I haven't read either of their books but I will now.
Thank you!
