It means "White town."

Same word, historically, as "Beograd" or "Belgrad". Or Bilhorod, if you like Ukrainian. (The Slavist in me says, "Hey, same word, notice the yat', and don't miss the pleophony.&quot

Don't think "race". Think "compass". Points of the compass had colors associated with them. North--think "snow and ice"--was white.

"White" meant "north". White Russia wasn't especially "white", it was north of Киѣвъ.
