when they misbehave.
Concerned about sweeping Russia-style sanctions from the west, Beijing has ordered a comprehensive stress test to study the implications of a similar scenario for its economy, the Guardian has learned.
an extensive exercise began around late February and early March when western allies imposed unprecedented sanctions against Moscow. Several key Chinese government agencies from banking regulation to international trade have been asked to come up with responses if the west imposed the same embargos on to China.
Those involved in this exercise use how Russia was treated as a baseline for Chinas own policy response should it be treated in a same fashion by the west, the person added. This stress test involves a range of methodology, including modelling.
Beijing did not specify why it had asked its vast bureaucracy to carry out such an exercise, the person said. They said that it was a natural reaction from Beijing given its close relationship with Moscow. A second source, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that Chinese diplomats had in the past few weeks also been meeting experts to understand the trajectory of this conflict.
Metaphorical
(1,604 posts)I think that everyone was surprised at how quickly and how comprehensively the sanctions against Moscow came together. It would be harder to do it with China - the Chinese economy is not that much smaller than the US economy at this point - but China is also relatively vulnerable to being blockaded along both seaports and airports.
I don't see this as a sign that China is thinking about the invasion of Taiwan in the immediate future, but these steps seem a reasonable precaution nonetheless.

(10,303 posts)If the PRC (China) had to be sanctioned for any reason - what would be the impact to us? The USA has tighter economical ties with the PRC than the Russian Federation.
If the PRC had demonstrated with Hong Kong that "One Country Two Systems" could work then I personally might have trusted them to do the same with Taiwan. However in my mind the PRC has failed here because HK is becoming more and more intertwined with mainland China. HK went from autonomous to semi autonomous.
If Xi has sense he'll maintain the status quo. If he's a dick head like Pooty Boy then he'll invade Taiwan and have a big fat mess on his hands. And a lot of dead people.

China is going to reap the rewards that Ukraine and Russia are currently paying the brutally expensive down-payment on.
China will be fully prepared.
