Abbot wants to challenge SCOTUS decision requiring public education

Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that Texas would consider challenging a 1982 U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring states to offer free public education to all children, including those of undocumented immigrants.

"Texas already long ago sued the federal government about having to incur the costs of the education program, in a case called Plyler versus Doe," Abbott said, speaking during an appearance on the Joe Pags show, a conservative radio talk show. "And the Supreme Court ruled against us on the issue. ... I think we will resurrect that case and challenge this issue again, because the expenses are extraordinary and the times are different than when Plyler versus Doe was issued many decades ago."

The remarks came days after a leaked draft of a forthcoming U.S. Supreme Court opinion revealed that a majority of justices are poised to revoke Roe v. Wade, the landmark case establishing the right to abortion. . .

Abbott raised the possibility of challenging the ruling on education during a discussion about border security, after Pagliarulo asked whether the state could take steps to reduce the "burden" of educating the children of undocumented migrants living in Texas.

Even Gilead had an education system of sorts.

to stop educating most Texas, as would other states. The Republicans already hate education. They know their power relies on uneducated voters.

translation -- we got a majority of neo-Fascists on the supreme court now.

oh yes, let's do away with public education and just have for-profit Christian schools and home schooling.

Imagine Abbotts world: private schools for the wealthy, I guess, and then packs of kids roaming around like they do in summer time but with nothing to do year round?

or is he going to challenge child labor laws, too?

And teenagers with nothing to do, and no access to birth control or abortion will simply make more kids.

They're after public education, too.
THat's what helped women get ahead, that, and reproductive freedom.

Gaetz said the quiet part out loud. Anything past 8th grade is over educated.
Kind of like Warren Jeffs and the FLDS.

…work in the cotton mills and sleep beneath the big bobbins at night.

Why there’s a whole host of honest jobs they could be learning to fit them for the future Abbott has in mind. It’s a whole new world! They can easily be trained to sort recyclables at the landfill, for instance. Think of the possibilities.

lServitude. That is what they want.

The goal is pregnancies of brown skinned mothers giving birth to children the state doesn’t have to educate, support with welfare and are dependent on whatever industry will give them.

That is the gameplan.

likely never receive any benefits. They pay sales taxes, and if they have any hope/expectation of obtaining legal status, they also file tax returns. Apparently Abbott is ignoring these contributions.

I have a land line and so I get a number of polling calls. These polls run by a ton a attack lines against Texas public schools and I am happy to disagree with these attacks.

Texas wants to go to vouchers for private schools to gut public educaition

1) it would be much less of a "burden" if Texas stopped using federal and state taxpayer funds to subsidize vouchers for private schools.

2) a lot of Texas growers are going to have trouble finding workers. Plenty of jobs in agriculture worker friendly states.

I wonder what Desantis is going to do to raise the idiocy bar in Glorida.

Many of the wealthier Texas Republicans have interests in private, religious and charter schools. This is all about money in my opinion.

“Governor Abbott wants to close your child’s school.”

Simple messaging but we won’t capitalize on it because we don’t know good messaging when we see it. Even the people in the thread are getting hung up on the undocumented part. 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
