No wonder everyone is catching Covid. Kamala was wearing one. And one guy in the Joy Reid photo. I still wear one in public... has everyone else just given up?

(94,745 posts)Given the vaccination level among Democrats and in Blue States, and the low hospitalization rate among vaccinated people, the public and State and City leaders (including Democrats) decided two month ago not to fight a losing battle over requiring masks.

(24,330 posts)100% compliance with masks, even with law enforcement saying they refuse to enforce it.
I went to the supermarket yesterday and there were two people wearing masks. I was one of them.

(630 posts)as required for air travel. I'll note that i wore one all the time pre-vaccination, in a place it wasn't the popular thing to do. I just think now, until a variant shows otherwise, that it isn't necessary for a vaccinated person in a population with 70%+ exposure. Our elected leaders, thankfully, have reached the same conclusion.

(34,101 posts)The number of new COVIDcases is climbing at rates even faster than reported since we've stoppped testing. But vaccinations and boosters ward off the worst of the immediate consequences (hospitalization and death) for most who are vaccinated and boosted.
Our denial has to do with pretending the long-term comsequences don't matter. I've seen first hand the cognitive dramatic impact it can have for months (and still ongoing) on a vaccinated and boosted individual.
Our denial also has to do with pretending that those who are least able to fend for themselves (immune compromised, vulnerable because of physical conditions or age) just have to suck it up - paraphrasing one DU member - they are always going to have to take special precautions. It sucks, but too bad.
Our denial has to do with the dearth of information we have about the long term implications (other than long covid) on our health. The data we do have is bad. For the entire duration of the data we have, we know that even mild and asymptomatic cases create a greater risk of cardiac events, diminished executive reasoning, loss of brain mass. We are just beginning to study what else it causes - and it will be decades before we know.
But far too many are tired of caring, and of leading by example - and most like Republicans - it is politically expedient to pretend it is over. So we are.

(21,910 posts)another event today with the Bidens, celebrating Cinco de Mayo... see any/many mask?
Biden is 79 years old. So many people around him have gotten it. I just don't want him to get it.... even if he is vaxxed and boosted. I know everyone is tested at these events, but they were at the White House Correspondents Dinner the other night too. And yet Jonathan Karl and other journalists came down with it afterward.
In the days since WHCD weekend, reporters and staffers from CNN, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Politico, and other participating news organizations have tested positive for the virus. Most notably, ABC's Jon Karl, who shook hands with President Biden and who sat next to Kim Kardashian, has fallen ill, as Politico's Maxwell Tani first reported.

(2,957 posts)Let's get normal back. For the vaccinated and healthy COVID is minimally harmful. Not gonna wear a mask for the rest of my life here...
