Daunte Wright’s mother detained after recording traffic stop

May 6, 2022

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — The mother of Daunte Wright, who was fatally shot by a suburban Minneapolis police officer, said she was injured while she was briefly detained by one of the same department’s officers after she stopped to record an arrest of a person during a traffic stop.

Katie Wright said Thursday she was worried about what the Brooklyn Center officers might do to the person being handcuffed when she pulled over on Wednesday night. In April 2021, her 20-year-old son, who was Black, was killed during a traffic stop by Kim Potter, a white officer who said she confused her handgun for her Taser.

“All I was doing was my civic duty to pull over and make sure that those babies got home safe to their families because I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other families,” Wright said.

It’s legal for citizens to film police in Minnesota as long as they don’t interfere with officers, according to the state’s ACLU chapter. The Associated Press left a message Friday asking whether the officer involved would face discipline.

Videos show a Brooklyn Center police officer grabbing the wrist of Daunte Wright's mother while she was recording a traffic stop Wednesday evening.

Katie Wright, the mother of the 20-year-old fatally shot by Brooklyn Center police during a traffic stop last April, says she pulled over on the shoulder of Highway 252 to take video after seeing a large police presence around a single vehicle across the median on the other side of the highway.

If you are driving, and police have probable cause to do a traffic stop — speeding, running a stop sign, etc. — you have to produce your drivers license. This was not a traffic stop. He had no probable cause.

In this situation, police need Reasonable, Articulable, Suspicion that a Crime is afoot to demand she ID. All. Four. Elements. The cop had nothing. He was pissed that she had filmed. He wanted to get her license to run her for warrants, hoping he could arrest her. He said if she didn’t produce her license he was going to arrest her for “fraudulent driving,” whateverthefuck that might be.

Police swear an oath to protect the Constitution. I would bet my life that less than 1% have ever read it. Even fewer have read the cases interpreting it, such as Terry v. Ohio, 392 US 1 (1968) which sets out the RAS test.

Police are out of control. A trade school graduate (The ACADEMY in my state is a 16 week course, most of which is spent in hand-to-hand combat training, and on the range) shouldn’t have the power to deprive one of freedom, let alone life.
