QUESTION: "I have a friend who is very smart with a post graduate engineering degree. He's also a hard-core Trump supporter. What do some people who are obviously smart see in a leader like Donald Trump?"

My brothers like that. Very smart, engineer, die-hard Trump supporter.
Your friend may be intelligent, but I suspect hes lacking in emotional intelligence. Engineers notoriously fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. Hes doing all right, he cant imagine someone might be less fortunate, educated or intelligent as he is, therefore people in need of assistance must be stupid, lazy, or both, and why should he be obliged to support some lazy slacker?
Trump appeals to people, specifically white people, who cant sympathize with others outside their milieu. Im sure hes generous and forgiving to his family, but anyone in the slightest bit alien to his experience falls outside his imaginative grasp and, insofar as he has to contribute monetarily to their welfare through his taxes, are a threat to his bottom line and hence his own well-being. Throw in a little racism, misogyny (how does your friend do around women?), and an old-fashioned mean streak, and youve got a dyed-in-the-wool Trump supporter.

(3,707 posts)The root of the problem is not in "intelligence"; it is ignorance.*
The root of the problem is in "ego".
Ego is the 'ahamkara', (Sanskrit meaning "I" maker); the operating system for creating, defining and protecting 'self-identity.
This ego-identity is built of desires and aversions. The ego-identity creates a subjective world in which to live, one's milieu.
Wisdom is clearly knowing the objective world and negating one's obfuscating subjectivity.
*No one wants to be ignorant, thus the appeal of 'knowing', the special-kind of knowing that marks conspiracy theories.
The, lost to most mortals, high-level brilliance that shines throughout the Q-world.

(6,182 posts)A lot of intelligent people can be sociopaths who simply don't know how to interact with people, and don't care to know.
True wisdom comes from being able to see the world from many different points of view, not just your own.
Compassion and empathy are far more important in daily life.
These are skills the average Trump Humper doesn't have, and doesn't care to have.
