Lets be clear as to what hes talking about. Mitch McConnell is talking about a national ban on abortion without regard to the fact that states like California, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and many others would strongly oppose such a federal ban. As many commenters on Twitter noted, the GOP and Mitch went states rights to no womens rights. Just as in slavery, it was never about states rights.

(9,958 posts)... I'm surprised he would announce this... Mitch is a shrewd politician. Most people, including me, would have thought he would keep mum on this type of plan until after the Nov midterms. I guess he feels it's a winning issue - which is the really bad news. If Republicans win on a promise to ban all US abortion rights... we're in big trouble...

(5,499 posts)He is also sending a message to any republican senators who might be queasy about the overturn of R v. W and how it might play out in their states.
If Sue Collins could at least get enough Republicans to vote for cloture on her reproductive rights bill, she could get it passed.
I have to think she is working hard behind the scenes since it looks like she has been so publicly double-crossed.

(9,958 posts)... they pass something. At least, it will get everyone on record. I am also surprised that Susan Collins feels "double-crossed." When they answered questions about precedent and following the "rule of law," I knew they were being deceptive. Yes, they spoke accurately, but left out the fact that laws can change. They never said they agreed with the law and would not consider doing away with Roe v Wade. Susan Collins may have had another answer in private - but their pubic answers were cagy.

(5,499 posts)But when McConnell gives her a directive, she takes it. I've always thought she lied about Brett's promise to her. They (republicans) lie so much that I think sometimes they lose track until they are reminded.

(3,626 posts)Completely overturning Roe was not their plan at this point, but with the draft opinion the cat is out of the bag and they have no choice but to make a Hail Mary pass for the endgame. Their problem is that as soon as abortion is fully illegal a lot of their single-issue base voters will never bother voting again, so they have to cement their majority for all time now or the young people who are suddenly waking up to the fact that politics can affect them are going to wipe the GOP off the face of the Earth.
No call from me yet as to which outcome is more likely. Let's hope Thor takes the head shot this time.

(63,221 posts)would definitely not go out without taking a huge number of these bastards with me. Mitch would be on the top of my list. This is just a joke, of course. I would never really do such a thing.

(5,899 posts)This kind of rhetoric doesn't help and I don't want someone actually taking action of this kind. The only way to defeat them is to vote.

(22,780 posts)they are a big enough voting bloc for us not to take lightly. The last thing Democrats need now is division.

(68,582 posts)are there to try to shoot it down. Evangelicals use birth control too...and I know several in Georgia who had abortions. The GOP might have lost 'friends' they are counting on. I suggest rather than predicting failure which can demoralize voters, you climb aboard the Midterm train and lend a hand. We can not only beat them, but we can also destroy them if we all work hard. Fired up...and ready to go.

(5,899 posts)My rosy red ass. The fangs are out and it's clear that all the bullshit rhetoric of the past 45 years was just that -- bullshit. They want control over the most intimate parts of people's lives, but want to completely ignore the larger parts of society. They want small government, all right, but only for the boardroom and the Executive Suite.
I'm as furious as I've been in years about this but I'm glad it came to light before the midterms. Get out and VOTE, dammit!
