US Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has blocked the passage of a $40 billion aid bill to Ukraine. Paul demanded changes to the legislation that would include implementing a special inspector general to oversee how the aid is spent, according to CNN.
We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the US economy, Paul said.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell offered to allow a vote on the Republican senators amendment. But CNN is reporting that Paul insisted that it be added to the actual bill.
The package is ready to go, Schumer said. The vast majority of senators on both sides of the aisle want it. Theres now only one thing holding us back the junior senator from Kentucky is preventing swift passage of Ukraine aid because he wants to add at the last minute his own changes directly into the bill. His change is strongly opposed by many members of both parties.

(102,343 posts)COVID money to his donors. No one here would argue with accountability, but don't make it a defense of Paul. It won't end well because it is wholly unjustified.

(47,568 posts)It isn't really an unreasonable change, but calling for it at the last minute is ridiculous. Too many lives are at risk. I guess Rand needs to be part of the news cycle. Can't have people like Marjorie Taylor Greene sucking all the oxygen out of the room.

(3,360 posts)an almost perfect intersection of self-righteousness and idiocy. I'd call him pig-ignorant, but at least he'd is capable of stringing together more than two sentences-- an art lost on benighted and unlettered idiots such as Boebert, Greene and (lol.nt) others.

(35,350 posts)Cloture vote.
Or alter the language slightly--that would require a vote--to include what he wants.
Why be opposed to "oversight" to prevent corruption?
Then if he's still opposed, you've wasted a day or two and isolated the tumor.
As it is, they've wasted a day or two and just tried to score political points against a foe. What's the primary goal? The legislation or making Rand look bad?
I'd have quietly said, "Sure." Remove his grandstanding. And get the bill passed. And I'd take a pass on the chance to say bad things about a foe, because of priorities.
