My daughter in law, my husband and I will be at the Cleveland rally today. I have been marching since the 60's and I am exhausted. No stopping us now.

(4,555 posts)First rally last Sunday. Today is my 2nd rally, in my lifetime. At 68, this is a big deal. Im off the couch and ready to fight back against this horrendous regressive oppressive bulllcrap.
You are probably already headed out, but I have a question if you have a moment to respond:
There are two rallies I can choose from:
One in a village with two colleges, and its the country seat. Turn-out will PROBABLY be a dozen or so. Tends to be red-purple with many MAGA, but plenty of college kids.
One is in a large city and will no doubt have quadruple the turn-out and audience.
Which has more impact in the grand scheme? Go to the small one which shows widespread support across more of the country? Or go to the larger one which just reinforces that large cities with lots of progressive people live any way??
Im outta here in about 90 minutes

(4,118 posts)Im so excited. We have been doing these since 2013, except for Covid years, and we recruited a young woman to organize. I walked her through the permit at City Hall- she created a Facebook event, the graphic, connected with Womens March.

(865 posts)Hoping for a good turnout to drown out the forced birthers who will definitely be lurking and screaming.
Oddly, tfg is having a rally downtown at the convention center today. Lot of confused people with flags will be milling about.

(865 posts)I'll post pics if I see anything worthy. The forced birthers here are obnoxious and definitely feeling triumphant. Mix that with delusional wingnuts of all flavors and you can get a scary batch of red. white and blue garbed idiots.
Looking forward to all the awesome supporters that will turn out on our side.

(28,277 posts)I'm torn over this. I don't want you or anybody else on our side to suffer harm. On the other hand, I'd love to see tfg's ill-advised Austin event go right down the toilet. We shall see.

(865 posts)Only a hardcore knot of counter protesters will bother the pro-choice rally. Mostly there will be flag draped pickups honking around in Austin traffic - wondering where to park. It's really not a friendly venue for them. I'm surprised the trumpists chose the downtown convention center.
The events are separated by 10 city blocks and a few hours. Since tfg's crowd tends to be older and/or overweight the majority will not sweat their way back and forth. There will be a lot of APD and State Troopers.

(102,418 posts)find someone the day of the leaked decision after getting some emails from Women's March and Planned Parenthood that the 14th was the tentative date for protests. This is wrenching for me.
I'm with you all today, but in spirit only, I'm afraid. Go show 'em!

(17,047 posts)I looked online, but couldn't find a location near me. I have relatives marching elsewhere today.
I'll be out later and might drive downtown to see if there is an event.
UPDATE: I found information posted on a friend's page on fb. I passed it along to some of my other Dem friends.

(17,047 posts)We had a good turnout, about 75 people, women and men, really pumped. A drummer from the local UU Church was there and kept a beat going the whole time, also handed out noise makers. Some of the people made extra signs to share, brought water, masks, hand sanitizer. We were on one of the busiest intersections in Marietta (OH) and there was more positive response from cars going by than negative. I'm glad I went.
My daughter thinks they had a really good turnout in D.C.

(865 posts)Maybe 3- 4k up or down. Best part for me was seeing the dozen or so counter protesters completely walled off by pro-choice activists. The forced birthers left after about an hour escorted by State Troopers. They were accompanied all the way off Capitol ground by a circle of chanting activists.
Great speeches and energy, peaceful but purposeful.
