Just one example of what we're up against (re: Buffalo mass shooter and social media).

[Edit notes: The DUers that responded were right. This crap doesn't need to be shared, and this YouTube video is garbage, I've removed the video link and lyrics. If you really want to view toxic incel crap, I've left the name of the "artist" in the original text below. Watch at your own risk!]

There has been a lot of discussion about the Buffalo mass shooting being yet another example of a basement-dwelling incel radicalized by 4chan/8chan/whatever the hell they call it now. That appears to be true, based on the ridiculous "manifesto" the shooter published on social media; he makes the Unabomber seem sane. I think the Buffalo shooter might be the first mass murderer to cite Pepe memes--God help us!--to justify his actions.

The incredible toxicity of social media has a long history familiar to DUers. One of the worst aspects of social media is the dehumanization and misogyny seen so often in messages and memes that are widely shared (the "NPC" and "helicopter ride" memes, the "purple-haired SJW", demonizing women in HR, obsession with "cucks", etc.). Here's one of the more egregious things that I came across recently, though apparently it's an "oldie" from so-called "chan culture". As well as places like 4Chan, I think it was also featured on the now-defunct "Return of Kings" site run by the execrable RooshV.

In case you think this is a parody, this guy who calls himself "NegativeXP" formerly used the moniker "SchoolShooter" until he found out that wasn't going to help his career. (It got "censored" by YouTube and Twitter. Wow, who knew?!).

Please don't repost RW hate crap. It's toxic contaminated and just adds to the mental pollution.

Now I have to go rinse my mind out with some Mozart.

...however. This crap is so stupendously idiotic that I thought it should at least be noted. Maybe the lyrics should be pulled?

Have you seen the Buffalo shooter's "manifesto"? It's definitely influenced (to say the least) by this kind of thing. The Buffalo massacre was literally "murder by Pepe meme", as I mentioned in the OP.

no haven't read and won't read his manifesto. I'm not interested in allowing the rantings of hatred to disturb my peace of mind. That anyone would murder peaceful people at a grocery store is already disturbing enough to know. What more do we need to know, except that he gets convicted and locked up forever.

Creeps like that guy lust after publicity and notoriety. Let's not give them space and reamplify their insane hatred. There's already a surplus of hatred in the air.

So here's a little something to rinse out and purify your mind.

I've been following this stuff for a long time. I don't have any idea what to do about this toxic "culture". What do you suggest people here do?

You can always search for it online if you really want to see it. It's garbage. Total misogyny. But this alt-right crap was a huge influence on the Buffalo shooter's idiotic "manifesto".

...can do so. Actually, I'd recommend a book by Angela Nagle called Kill All Normies: Online Culture Wars From 4Chan And Tumblr To Trump And The Alt-Right. Reading that would be a lot more constructive than watching any "music" video by NegativeXP.

Nagle also gave a talk at UNSW-Sydney you can see at this link. You can download it if you have a browser add-on like VideoDownloadHelper or similar.

researching and studying Buddhist teachings.

"All experience is preceded by mind.
Led by mind, created by mind.

Speak or act with a contaminated mind, and suffering follows.
As the wheel of the wagon follows the hoof of the ox.

Speak or act with a peaceful mind, and happiness follows.
Like a never-departing shadow."
