(3,044 posts)...my first time voting in person in PA some 40+ years ago, I lived in a very Repug area and in a small town. I had been in the military up until then so always voted mail in. I went to the polling place and pretty much knew all the volunteer poll workers from around town and my work. I had not experienced the Dem vs. Repug voting booths. There were about 8 booths but only one was Dem. When I showed the guy checking registration my ID, he looked at it, now knowing I am a Dem and says "Oh, you are one of THOSE" and pointed me to the lone Dem booth kind of off at the end of the line.
We just moved back to PA from WA where there was no such Dem vs. Repug silliness at the polls and besides almost all voting in WA has been by mail in only for some time. Will be interesting to see how close to the Dark Ages we still are in PA.

(10,885 posts)DESIGNATED voting booths??? Whatever happened to the privacy of your vote? Is this even legal?

(3,415 posts)You can vote in one or the other, but not both.

(10,885 posts)and I've lived in five different states. Granted, as I've picked up my Primary ballot, I must declare in order to get the proper one, but I've never been directed to a particular booth or area in which to vote. Even in a Primary, this seems counter to the secrecy provision of one's vote. I'm floored!
Just curious: Is this resulting from using a voting machine as opposed to a paper ballot? I've always had paper ballots which can be completed in any booth. Are these machines that are pre-programmed for only a particular party's candidates?

(3,415 posts)It involved those old punch card ballots, and later the electronic black boxes. With the punch card ballots, after sign-in I was directed to go to either one side of the large room, or to the other depending on my party affiliation. With the black boxes, I was directed to a certain voting machine and the poll helper inserted the proper e-key. The ballots also differed depending on where you lived, as the little town was bisected by the county line. Hope this clarifies.

(10,885 posts)I learn something new (to me) on DU all the time, and this is another example.
I've always had paper ballots. Check in with ID, declare which ballot is desired, go to any booth to complete, and deposit through the counter. Easy peasey. These days, it's even better - I vote by mail and love it!

(3,044 posts)I really didn't like the system as you have this person, that once you get cleared as duly registered, you hand him/her the R or D slip AND your ballot. They insert the ballot in the machine and start it up. I think they are setting it for the D or R roster of candidates. You then vote and the ballot paper kicks out and you then take it to a separate machine that is a reader/counter I think. I feel better knowing there is paper in the process but not real keen that someone gets to insert your ballot paper and has access to the machine before you. The person I had I had no issue with but what if they entered a key vote? There is a way to back track and Undo on the screen but you would need to be paying close attention. I actually kicked myself later as while I double checked the electronic entries, I didn't actually check the paper ballot reflected that. Will do better next time. Really miss WA State with simple all mail in voting and no restriction in the primary to have to vote only D or R. PA, still largely in the dark ages.

(9,999 posts)in a very red precinct, so yeah. All the time. Every time I go to vote, the road up to the polling polling place is lined with signs for THEIR candidates, and someone is standing right outside the door handing out "sample ballots" with checkmarks in the boxes for THEIR candidates. I usually ignore them, but last time I gave them THE LOOK. Didn't say anything, just that. Funny reaction from some guy whose mama must have given him that growing up...I swear he shrunk a couple of inches!

(9,275 posts)Theres always a D booth and an R booth outside of the church hall where we vote. I politely say no thanks to the R people and chat a while with the Ds while taking their stuff.
I was voting by mail but was afraid repugs would throw out my ballet.

(129,543 posts)almost 2 weeks ago. No fuss, no muss.
The city received it and the state emailed the confirmation that it was "received timely" and "recorded" 2 days after I mailed it.

(22,165 posts)We are outnumbered 3:1 with Republicans in this county. It was a struggle to find anyone to work every election and we were usually short handed by two people. When mail in ballots were made available, my husband and I quit working the polls and voted by mail. The county ended up closing our polling place because they couldnt get anyone else to work. Now its a 5-7 mile drive to get to the nearest one. Maybe that will slow down the MAGAs.

(1,481 posts)not in your face woman and man greeted me. They were Democrats.
When I gave my name to the poll worker, she yelled "DEMOCRAT" as if I were some unworldly being. I'm surrounded by them!

(4,228 posts)ended up being a nightmare there. We moved to a suburb of Cleveland to be near family. No one is allowed near the poles so no one badgering you as you walk into vote. I pray that Fetterman wins today.

Regarding MAGAts, I have 2 retired lady friends who used to work at the polling places. They gave it up when big surly guys started hanging around inside, crowding their personal space, and hanging over their shoulders to look at the books of signatures.

(32,777 posts)Mailed my ballot in and it has already been received. Didn't have to look at any MAGAts either.
But I'm in Pittsburgh and we don't have too many here.
My PA polling place is full of Republicans who should know better but don't. These aren't rural whack jobs. PreTrump I could see it, most are well off, they were raised thinking Democrats were for union members. Now I just think it's instinctive. I'm used to being one of the few Dems.
What did piss me off was the whacks I encountered at my polling place for the Presidential in 2016. Decked out it that t-shirt that said Hillary should be jailed. I never laid eyes on these deplorables at my polling place, I couldn't figure out where they came from. Trump will always win in my little neck of the woods. I just live with it.
