(54,087 posts)Pennsylvania just finished up with a contentious, hysterical Republican primary where all three candidates were ramping up the xenophobic and paranoid rhetoric of the extreme right.
This is devastating news, but not a surprise

It is a failed city when it comes to shootings and violent crime. The level of that activity is absolutely unacceptable.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/philadelphia-12-year-old-charged-with-murder-in-brutal-beating-death-of-70-year-old-asian-american-man
A 12-year-old Philadelphia boy is accused of fatally beating a 70-year-old Asian American man during a brutal carjacking attack. The boy, who has not been named because he is a minor, allegedly joined two others in carrying out the deadly assault. A 16-year-old and 18-year-old also face murder charges in connection with the Dec. 2 carjacking, according to Philadelphia police.
The victim, Chung Yan Chin, was left clinging to life in a hospital after prosecutors say the three youths threw him to the ground and pummeled him before making off with his vehicle. He suffered a brain injury and died on Dec. 21. The 12-year-old faces a court hearing next week, while 18-year-old John Nusslein faces a court hearing for murder charges in April. The 16-year-old, identified by police as Qiyam Muhammad, has an arrest warrant out for him but is not yet in custody, authorities said.

(65,180 posts)I agree that it is unacceptable. I think the other poster is right though to say it isnt just a Philly problem. I dont think Krasner nor Outlaw can do a lot more - we need to address the poverty, lack of educational opportunities, the relationship with police, the number of guns, etc. The frustration of the pandemic also raised violence.

I have exactly a block and a half to walk between my parking lot and my medical building, and Ill tell you that its getting scarier and scarier on the streets. Stuff is happening anytime day or night and you just never know. We had issues in the past but it is becoming absolutely wanton.

(4,170 posts)at a gas station in broad daylight? I think that was last week.
I cant find the link now, but I remember reading about it.

(43,579 posts)The killers pulled into the gas station on 1060 Mt. Airy Ave. in North Philadelphia in a 2009 Mazda with the New Jersey license plate V62-PWX. They stopped the car outside the gas pumps, apparently looking around for Dixon. Once they located their victim, they moved the car to an easy getaway spot.
The two men then hopped out carrying guns and immediately opened fire into the crowded gas station area. One man appeared to be carrying an AK-47, or a similar gun, while the other man opened fire with a handgun that appeared to have an extended magazine.
Dixon was struck multiple times. Police took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are offering $20,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

Something is drastically wrong with a country where the so called "right" to guns overrules the right to live.

(63,221 posts)It feels so unsafe to me. Now that Covid restrictions are pretty much lifted, I still feel like I have to limit my activity just because there are so many insane people out there - and yes, still Covid. This country just feels like chronic stress to me.
I remember when I lived in Austria for a semester in college and how peaceful I felt and how much more self-assured I became. I loved it there. I am not sure why, but I just wasn't stressed out all the time the way I was back here. I was in college in upstate NY at the time, which really wasn't that stressful, but the difference between living there and then being back here was like night and day.
When I came back to this country and landed at JFK, the stress was palpable and I was so unused to it I just dropped my bags and started crying. I hated being back here and I was miserable. I wanted to stay in Europe forever. When I finally arrived home to upstate NY I had my first major anxiety attack which was horrible. I couldn't function and my heart rate was 170 beats per minute (best friend's sister was an Army nurse and took my pulse). I kept thinking about how peaceful and relaxed I was in Vienna.
At this point, I would do anything to get out of here and live in a place where I wasn't on high alert all the time. Ireland, Northern UK, Southwestern UK, Northwestern Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe (as long as it stays politically stable). Life just seems so much more peaceful over there. This country is a mess.
