About these shooters. The idea goes back a long way. An example: Charles Whitman: Aug 1, 1966

Texas Tower Shooter I was alive then and remember it. I am sure some others here also remember it.
The guy climbs a Tower in Texas and shoots innocent people walking by. Horrific beyond belief. Unfortunately,
we live in a country where people shoot each other. Often, and this is very sad. Whitman killed 16 people and
wounded 31 before he himself was killed by a police officer.

It turned out that Whitman had a brain tumor that might have been a factor in what he did, though that wasn't definitively established. But it took a few years until shootings - first in schools and workplaces, later just about everywhere - became frequent. Now it seems like they're almost every day.
