Two armed men in cars shot each other to death in a Kansas grocery store parking lot after one...

of the men “made a demeaning comment about the other man’s loud exhaust pipe.”

The Lawrence Police Department says detectives continue to investigate the deaths of two men who were shot in the Hy-Vee parking lot on Tuesday evening.

LPD said the two victims of the shooting have been identified as Zachary Michael Sutton, 22, and Monty Ray Amick, 53, both of Lawrence.

Detectives said they believe the initial interaction between the two victims happened near 23rd St. and Harper. They said both vehicles traveled west on 23rd where a confrontation occurred near 23rd and Iowa.

Chief Rich Lockhart said Amick had made a demeaning comment about the Ford’s loud exhaust pipe. He said the drivers then continued to exchange words until they reached the Hy-Vee parking lot. He said that is when Sutton stepped out of the truck and fired a gun. Amick returned fire and both had sustained gunshot wounds.

Sutton was pronounced dead at the scene and Amick was rushed to a hospital in Overland Park where he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

"rushed to a hospital in Overland Park" from being shot at 23rd and Iowa in Lawrence - makes absolutely no sense to me... Overland Park is a 30 minute drive.

but in Overland Park...when I was a foolish teen... and driving with my buddies late on a Friday night... we saw this car on the freeway, it was a car that had been sawed in half just behind the drivers seat and a different car welded to the front end. They hadn't even tried to match body styles and it wasn't painted yet. Worse it that it was a "convertible" meaning the owner hacked off the top.

Being 17 my friends and I pointed and start laughing at the junk car... the passenger pulled out a handgun and started waving it at us and yelling. We exited the freeway and got the hell away from these assholes.

Don't know what would happen today... I suppose they would have shot at us.

to see my boyfriends and some bands from time to time. The only thing I can think of is that they don't have a trauma team that could deal with him.

And aha!

When three men suffered gunshot wounds Sunday in a residence along West 19th Terrace in Lawrence, they weren’t taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Instead they were taken by air and ground ambulances to Kansas City-area hospitals, a frequent occurrence when people suffer traumatic injuries in the Lawrence area. For LMH, given its proximity to other hospitals with more resources for treating those injuries, it’s the plan that makes the most sense, said Dr. Caleb Trent, the medical director for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

A year ago, Lawrence Memorial Hospital obtained its designation as a Level 4 trauma center. That means it can provide advanced life support for those with traumatic injuries prior to transferring patients to a facility with a higher classification.

“We’re located between a Level 2 in Topeka (Stormont-Vail HealthCare) and a Level 1 in Kansas City (Kansas University Hospital),” Trent said. “And so part of it is, it doesn’t necessarily make sense for us as a hospital to provide (that kind of care).”

The younger man, Sutton, was one of 3 passengers in the Ford F-150 pickup along with the driver. Amick was the sole occupant of the 2007 Blue Nissan Xterra but he decides to get into a pissing contest with a group of 4.

residential area or if you get behind them. I think the loud exhaust came from bikers. They opposed helmet laws yet claim the loud exhaust was for safety. Now the cops don't enforce the laws for anyone. Back in the 60s when I was a teenager you were pulled over in a second for glass packs.

These assholes with no mufflers, or just loud exhausts and whatever it is sports car drivers add that causes noise levels to go through the roof when they floor it for maximum rpms are everywhere. They scare children and animals, not to mention us old folks. Then you throw in the asshole motorcyclists with loud exhausts and music playing at full volume and it is a common occurence these days. I have no doubt they are MAGAts and they are all, everyone of them, an asshole. But most are probably proud of that. Rant over.

most gun violence.

An "explosion" of incidents in red places you say...so what do you call the ongoing gun violence in blue areas? Philadelphia has outstripped Chicago by this time now, I believe.

Are we to ignore that? Does it not count? Why do we find it amusing when Elmer shoots Goober, but not the daily shootings elsewhere? The city nearest me has about 4 a week, and that's a conservative estimate. And it's not Elmer and Goober shooting each other.

So who is ignoring what?

Many states don’t apply concealed carry laws to vehicles, a person’s home or their place of business. I would bet anyone that can legally own a gun can also have it in their vehicle in KS whether they have a concealed carry license or not. Here in Florida anyone can have a loaded gun in their vehicle, it just has to be in a closed container of some type (zippered bag, glove compartment, center console, snapped holster, etc).
