We are in a rural part of the desert and have been getting by with really slow internet and no options. President Obama's program to bring high speed internet to rural areas has been ongoing in our area and I finally got my installation today. This is what what I am now getting for $50 a month.

We switched to AT&T Fiber when it got blown our way. Spectrum didn't want to negotiate on its prices - their loss. For years Spectrum (or Time Warner Cable as it was known as) was our only choice, or AT&T's finest dial up service. We were even in a cellphone blank spot for years too. T-Mobile rolling out 5G has meant we now have cellphone coverage at home too - it's not fast 5G but it is a usable signal at home.
AT&T are threatening to replace all its copper cable with fiber, so maybe at some point my in-laws will get some high speed action. T-Mobile has excellent 5G and 4G coverage where they live, but their home internet service is oversubscribed there, so they can't get it.... So they have Hughes Net.
Government help is helpful definitely.... As long as the private companies do their part too...
