I watched the 60 min story below twice.

It struck me to the bone. I had what might be called an epiphany. I believe i now understand my own feelings of sadness, fear, remorse about the social and political environment surrounding us today. What sets my folks apart from the majority. At least, this is how I feel. I may only be speaking for myself but I believe others can identify similar feelings.

"My folks" are (in order of dominance from my DNA testing) African, Native American, Scotch, Welsh, Irish. But of course, I am African American by accepted categorizing so my folks are black Americans for generations going back to at least the early 1700s.

What sets most of us apart? To me it's that we long for and live for RELATIONSHIPS, not OWNERSHIP.

Mr. Miller bought that home after much prodding from a sibling to set aside a place where his family (relationships) and extended family could meet for special occasions to enjoy each other, to love one another, to laugh, sing, pray and support one another. It wasn't to just OWN a piece of property. It wasn't about CRT or anything else except to build and nurture relationships. It's about belonging, being accepted, being loved and mutual respect.

Others want possessions, ownership, power over others, things and prizes, greed, inhumanity.

"My folks" want RELATIONSHIP. And if you don't want RELATIONSHIP and all that it includes, you ain't "my folks."

for your meaningful post and reminder about what truly matters!

I learned the lesson of the value of relationships, as you say, almost 30 years ago when our home burned down in a forest fire and we lost everything we owned!

But the people and animals survived.

What kept us afloat were relationships!

Family, community, friends.

Been on the relationship bandwagon ever since!

I loved hearing about how involved they are with the house, learning about every aspect of it.

was that the seller left all the antique furnishings. He either didn't want the hassle of
dealing with them or figured the house would sell better if he left everything.

It’s interesting that the senior Millers refused to discuss their possible slave heritage. And that their rural Virginia schools never taught it as the younger generation were growing up.

And now, just as people are desperately trying to cover it up again, the technology is finally allowing these stories of the enslaved to emerge.

The Thompson family’s reaction of joy, enthusiasm, acceptance is what you dream of but obviously they're outliers.

Great story. Thanks for this

11. sex on the wrong brain theory may explain some of it

a couple of hundred years ago most africans (except in parts of northern africa) and native Americans were experiencing a much higher real sex to masturbation ratio than europeans and other civilizations and empires.

the theory suggests ancestors of africans and native americans have less susceptibility to sowb since they didn't have centuries of separations from nature, organized religion and empire building and sexual repression selecting and cultivating sex on the wrong brain symptoms like greed materialism and the irrational need for certainty.

almost all our evolution was spent in nature surrounded by uncertainty and having real sex and starting families early. we lived in small groups and had to cooperate with democratic forms of organization to survive

but in the last few thousand years the 'civilizations' and empires began delaying the age of reproduction and repressing sex - extending the years of masturbation - by default with the wrong hand. the irrational need for certiainty grew. those 'civilizations' began to select for greed and authoritarian sowb symptoms like fear suspicion and subservience, lack of empathy and imagination, dependence on certainty and leaders who could create it, etc

some of those symptoms, probably to a lesser degree, may have been enough of a survival advantage in times of conflict, to explain why early humans went from 50-50 to 90% right handed over millions of years.

then it got really bad in those parts of the world that got really crowded and lacking natural food sources. and those characteristics, without democracy, will still get us in trouble - especially in times of chaos, pandemics that require social distancing, easy access to porn, and monopolized forms of media like talk radio where blowhards sell lies all day with royal unchallenged certitude.

that is the secret of authoritarian power and this authoritarian fascist bullshit is not human nature - all we need is a simple lesson in sex ed.

columbus - high sowb - meets the natives - low sowb.....
