Pelosi being denied communion is taking church history back 60 years

I grew up in parochial schools for most of my school days (in the '50s and '60s). Denying Pelosi communion is just absurd in today's world. Anyone who went to parochial schools back then can hear the nuns (well, I can anyway) saying what the archbishop said. But what the archbishop doesn't seem to get is that those days have passed. I'm not trying to speak for her, but it seems pretty obvious that her stand on the issue is as a humanitarian and one who believes woman have their medical rights, something which Repughs don't seem to get. It has nothing to do with Catholicism, but his ruling makes it that way.

Further, if believing in abortion rights denies her communion and possibly makes her a candidate for everlasting damnation, what about the rest of us?

It's retro Catholicism at its worst. I hope Pope Francis steps in and shuts this guy up.

It's entirely consistent to think something is a sin but should be legal.

I mean even adultery is legal, and the vast majority of us think it's morally wrong. We just don't think it's a good idea to have government investigating everyone's sins.

And no one is talking about asking bacon cheeseburgers or polyester/cotton blends a crime.

Church law and government law are different things. So pelosi saying the government shouldn't ban abortions doesn't mean she's promoting it or thinking it isn't a sin. She's just saying women should make their own decisions.

After all, doesn't god *want* us to use our free will and *choose* not to sin? Does god really want us to be coerced into doing the right thing? What does that prove?

Personally, have zero problem with abortion, I'm Jewish and for the most part, only the ultra-orthodox Jews have an ethical problem with abortion. Most jews think the fetus is a part of the woman, or a non-moral being until it draws its first breath. There are a few references to the soul entering a body on its first breath in the Torah.

That would be the old testament, part of the Christian bible. More bits of their religious texts for right wingers to ignore as they claim their religion insists that they are right.

.

That was one of the major concerns about placing Roman Catholics in high office positions.

Their beliefs or undue influence by the church would be used to manipulate them.

It seems that this is coming to fruition.

Spoken like a true pedophile.

That's not an accusation (though it is of course possible), just a statement that that is the way pedophiles think.

Most normal, sane people think that taking a child's innocence and saddling him or her with internal demons for the rest of their natural lives is worse than killing someone. Pedophiles don't get that.

Indeed. Important items do get multiply posted on DU.

Forcing women to pop out kids every year.

The Catholic Church learns nothing. Keeps repeating the same evil teachings/behavior forever.

(I raised in the Catholic faith and was disgusted as a teenager with the church practices and teachings.)

He said that after another one tried to pull this shit on Joe Biden. It was the Archbishop in Delaware, I think. It's funny how they're just pulling thisgarbage now. Both Pelosi and Biden have made their views known for decades. Yet, these fuckers wait until Biden becomes President to try to deny him communion? And, they wait until abortion is on the cusp of being made illegal to deny it to Speaker Pelosi? Such bullshit. It's LONG past time to remove their tax-exempt status.

And many bishops in the Catholic church were fine with what the Nazis did as they were doing it.
So I am not sure of their moral standing on anything.

I was just a school kid, but I still remember that shitshow. Grownups on my street, claiming they were voting Republican, because JFK would just take orders directly from the Vatican. (My parents kept their mouths shut, avoided arguments, and cast their votes for JFK.)

JFK had to make a speech to set the record straight.

I was attending Catholic school at the time. The nuns were all gaga over JFK.
I loved JFK, he was from Boston and Irish Catholic like my father.

This is when I became a political junkie, age 9.
