Back to the 50s - Don't Want Pregnancy? Don't Have Sex.

That was the reality for many in the 1950s. If you lived in many states and you were under the age of 21, you couldn't even buy condoms. That was true in California then. Condoms were for sale only by pharmacists then, right into the 1960s, and you had to prove you were 21 to buy them.

This is how the right-wingers want it to be again. It's all part of right-wing men's plan to control women. The next step is to get rid of marital rape laws. Then, they'll be able to keep their women pregnant and enslaved to them and their children as they please.

If you're a woman in that situation, every sexual encounter is a potential pregnancy. You can't get contraceptives. If you get pregnant, you can't have an abortion. You'll be trapped. If you're married, you can't even refuse to have sex, if the right-wingers get their way, because your husband can demand sex from you with impunity.

This is their plan. This is what they want. If we don't stop them, women's rights will end.

We must stop this! As a man, I remember the 1950s and 1960s. I abstained from having all sexual activity that could result in an pregnancy in my younger years. Many men would refuse to do that. Many men wouldn't abstain back then, either.

We must prevent right-wing men from enslaving women. We must!

even without contraceptives.

Teens have figured this out (in part due to the endemic nature of porn on the internet), I've heard tell that's big part of why rates of teen pregnancy are way down from years past.

I like to get a rise out out of these sorts of folks by pointing out that if you take away abortions and contraception, their sons and daughters will just resort to sodomy instead

That's the core of the problem. This is not really about sex. It is about individual rights. For the religious right wing, only men have those rights. Women, they believe, should be subservient to men in all things.

Under the Banner of Heaven, as a child of the 50s, teen of the 60's raised in a mormon convert home, I agree with you completely. I am in my 71 and still bear the scars of being a subservient woman. If you want to understand what is was like, watch this how. I no longer practice any religion. I just hope enough people men and women of all ages realizes the danger our democracy is in and votes for the people who will protect us.

and was in high school until 1963. So, I know the feelings of that time pretty well. I am frightened that we will return to those days and the restrictions women were under back then. I was aware of them then, too, and found them to be totally out of bounds, even then.

It wasn't just women, either. People of color had no rights at all, essentially. Those were not "the good old days" at all. They were the times we worked hard to change. And we did.

Now, we risk being thrown right back into those days, and the younger generations have no memory of what it was like. It's up to us oldsters to fill them in and hope they will respond to prevent themselves and their children from facing them again.

about what life holds for my 3 granddaughters 11 to 21. I was a sophomore 1966 1967 in California. My husband and I, were talking to one of our daughters about our marriage and family/ government classes. What our driver's ed teacher said about sex, she responded. "oh my god! a teacher would would be fired for saying that in our school district." School is not the same as what we experienced/learned in the 50's and 60's. I taught 2nd grand in a Conservative school district (2000) and had to be careful about anything/everything I said. I want women and men to be free and make their own decisions in the years to come. My father thought everyone who had a tan or dark complexion was a dirty "....". My husband and uncle, both of Sicilian descent were never good enough for him,(but in the long term both had good jobs and good retirement benefits.) All of my grandchildren have dark olive complexion and can get a dark tan without trying. I hope they never have to hear they are dirty"...". Again, I hope everyone votes to protect our rights.

It's nice to tell women they can decide to have sex but it is not true. Men can overpower a woman so easily it's not funny. I know from experience with an ex-boyfriend. No only means no if you can run fast enough. Until we solve for rape, no way women will be safe from this nightmare.

sex is a right and women do not have the right to refuse it. That is really the core of the problem. For those men, women are property. They think they should be able to dictate to them.

I thought I was pretty clear about all that in the body of my post.

I've read a few news stories about rapists having the tables turned on them by their potential female victims because they'd had self-defense/karate training. It isn't a solution by a long shot but, at least it could give the women a fighting chance to escape a horrific experience and maybe leave their potential rapist in a bloody heap.

that marital rape was impossible by the very definition of marriage. Well, marriage according to 17th century witch burners anyway. Just wait for that to get passed into law by a red state legislature. Yes, the reich wing are that crazy.

Another of Hale's logical "gems"...The existence of laws against witchcraft (the pact with the devil sort) are proof that witches exist. His judgments and writing had a significant impact on the Salem Witch Trials.

I'd say, it's not the 1950's they want to take us back to, but the 1650's.
