(58,785 posts)the church into the 20th century with greatly liberalized views, compared to before. She's lived through all the angry RW reactions in the 60 years since, and at 82 this targeted attack by a hard-core RW archbishop is nothing new to her.

(6,292 posts)nut job priests and bishops in the hopes of changing the culture in SF. All it did was get more of the normal Catholics to leave.
And the normal priests and laity continue to suffer.
I didnt know the answer, I guess only the pope can do something about him? But he was imposed on our region.

So he could probably do it in SF. They don't seem to have a standard process https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appointment_of_Catholic_bishops

(6,292 posts)This is really the right wing in the Catholic world crowing like roosters. They know they have Roe slain after a 50 year fight and so now they are strutting their stuff.
There is only one solution for noisy do nothing roosters in my experience.

(7,263 posts)It's how the Global Elite works - support extremely authoritarian religious leaders in progressive parishes to try to keep their flocks in line.
The bishop here closed a nearby local parish in the South Hills and merged it into another parish...of coarse the parish eliminated was extremely liberal, cared about working people and their problems, and had a liberal priest assigned to it - and the new on is Handmaiden Conservative Crazy that only cares about the unborn. (The bishop replaced the liberal priest with an extremely old school conservative authoritarian right before they announced the closing. My mom-in-law had attended that church for her whole life - she is 85 - but she left it when they replaced the liberal priest with the conservative asshat. Sad.)
SF and Pittsburgh are full of sane progressive working people who fight for their rights. Must be something in the air.

(4,552 posts)The church says no and they do it anyway. So stop giving them communion.

(7,263 posts)You win the green balloon and the chocolate fish.
Of coarse, that will NEVER happen in this USA. Not with 30% of the voters wanting their church to be actively involved in politics.
Of coarse most of those folks never took a civics class so they have NO FUCKING CLUE what the Constitution and Bill of Rights says.
But they can tell you the exact date and time of the next TFG rally, or what MFG ate for lunch, or who BarbieBoebart is howling at today.

(46,077 posts)I'll bet you many churches in that a-hole's diocese would also give her communion, too.

(51,626 posts)right now. They are tasty. I ate them with dip while watching Jesus Christ Superstar on Easter. This is my second container since they are so yummy and they are a harmless and fun way for this atheist to enjoy any damn time I want.

(51,626 posts)I was raised a Catholic until I was 9 and chose not to attend mass anymore when my parents asked if I wanted to go. My dad was an atheist and my mom thought it would be good to introduce my sister and me to it. We even had to go to CCD on Sat mornings. Of course I said I didn't want to go any more if I could sleep in late on Sat. I did like the communion wafers though. In fact, that was the only thing I did like. I remember trying to keep it from dissolving and make it last longer.
My whole family is a bunch of atheists and when I bring my version of chips (the wafers) and dip for Easter appetizers we all get a kick and a laugh out of it.

This is the brand I get and I see they are on clearance with 75% off. What a deal! And they even have the special juice to drink with it. They haven't gone stale in over a year (economical and tasty).

(4,758 posts)Many many moons ago, me and my college friends were stoned off our gourds and decided to test the marketing line of "you can actually EAT them!" for the then-newfangled starch-based packing peanuts, which looked exactly like snow-white cheese poofs
they taste exactly like wafers. Like, identical.
Like we may have had a bottle of wine or two and eaten like...a stereo box worth of them. Weed makes you doofy

(1,654 posts)It wasn't sudden at all. But in the 50s when I was in Catholic school one of the paramount things we were taught in civics class was about render to Ceasar that which is Ceasar's and to God that which is God. There were other things which didn't seem right to me even then, like St. Maria Goretti who apparently jumped to her death rather than be raped and was declared a saint. Even as a kid not even knowing what rape was, if rape was a sin, the sin is the rapist's, not the victim's. There were other things like the patriarchy of the boys got to go first in everything, etc. But it really bothered me that we were taught that it was perfectly right that the parochial schools didn't get tax money because that would be putting government into religion, and religion was not to interfere in government. Even though I had friends who were priests and knew a few nuns, I felt that so many of the religions, especially Christian religion, was increasingly and alarmingly leaving their lane and trying to run everything. If Christ ever does come back, boy is he going to be ticked off.

(94,721 posts)The archbishop in question controls the churches in San Francisco when shes home.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)She can go to any parish outside of the San Francisco archdiocese (and I think one other diocese, maybe Santa Rosa?) and present herself for Communion. It's up to whomever is distributing Communion to decide whether or not to give it to her. Caveat to that is if bishops or archbishops have directed their respective diocesan priests to either support or ignore the archbishop from San Francisco.

(4,253 posts)As a former Catholic white woman who left the Catholic Church at 18 I feel the pope needs to show his stand on this.
I left the church for it's stands on abortion and birth control. I never felt confessing to a man inside a booth is confessing to God. I disliked how men were superior over women in the Catholic Church.
My mom would ask me to go to church. I would tell wherever I am is my church.
This archbishop should made to retire.
