New York’s COVID case rate drops for sixth straight day, Hochul’s office says

After weeks of uber-contagious omicron subvariants rippling across New York, something else is finally spreading: Good news.

The state’s weeklong COVID case rate fell for the sixth straight day on Monday, hitting its lowest level since May 7, Gov. Hochul’s office said.


Daily coronavirus death tolls have climbed after slipping into the single digits some days last month, and the state announced 24 more deaths on Monday. But the sustained case decline offered a welcome signal as New Yorkers hope for a summer free of virus anxieties.

“As we continue to monitor the numbers, I encourage New Yorkers to continue using the tools to protect against and treat COVID-19,” Hochul said in a statement.

Two months down. The downward trend would be right on time for the northeast which began to experience ba.2 in mid March

4. Death rate is actually rising, +28% in past 14 days, but that's to be expected --

deaths lag cases by about a month, so we wouldn't expect to see deaths falling yet.

But death rates are lower than in past waves. Lately, "only" about 8 times the rate of traffic fatalities (including pedestrians, bikes).

Interesting - my Pfizer is the only one where I had a reaction -- I woke up with violent shivering (but that went away when I just put another layer of clothes on, but something like that has never happened before, plus a mild fever -- 100.4 deg -- though I suspect that thermometer reads low, anyway later in the day my temps were fine)

Original vax: Johnson & Johnson -- no reaction
Booster #1: Moderna - no reaction
Booster #2: Pfizer - chills and fever (see above)

9. the Pfizer hit me hard all three times

I had a couple of weeks of sore neck, and nerve pain that got into my upper jaw and teeth - yikes! Such a relief to find the Moderna not even at the level of a flu shot symptom-wise.

7. I'm in Pennsylvania

Here in western Pennsylvania, cases are beginning to surge again. Anecdotally, I know more people with covid now than at any time in the pandemic—and those are just the people who tested and admitted to having covid.

Also anecdotally, I know a person who works in an ER near Disney World who reports that many people arriving with covid symptoms refuse to get tested for covid because quarantining would ruin their vacation.

14. I don't understand why you always think people object to good news

In my county in New York, we've had high cases for several months.

It is literally terrifying for people like me who are high risk and immune compromised. My child has cancer.

I want Covid to be gone forever. It has ruined my life. People in my area have been running around maskless and spreading Covid for months. The rates might go down for a little while, and then we just get hit hard again.

I am so angry at the people who don't care about the medically fragile. I don't see why wearing a mask is such a big deal when it could save the life of someone.

Obviously, I am not going to restaurants or concerts or traveling so I don't care if everyone is unmasked at risky activities, but it would sure be nice to safely go to the grocery store or pharmacy. If an area is in high transmission by CDC guidelines, there should automatically be an indoor mask mandate at all essential businesses to protect the vulnerable people.

13. Good news but...

This is kind of hard for me to be happy about because every wave that passes only gives us a fleeting moment before the next one rolls in. It is so discouraging.

CDC put Michigan in high risk a week ago. So we are a few weeks behind the high rates in the northeast. But even when it goes down will it ever be safe? Is the next variant coming a few weeks later?

My wife has many co-morbidities so we can’t just “get on with our lives” and go back to living like we did in 2019, which most of the country has done.
