I am going to say it out loud

"Common sense gun laws" is a politically palatable trope describing ineffective half-measures that we HOPE will end the carnage.

Nothing short of REAL gun control will stop this. Mandatory buy-backs and confiscation/destruction of handguns and assault weapons is the ONLY way this can end.

It would be VERY difficult politically to change the Constitution (or the Supreme Court). I get that. Based on the experience of other countries, I have concluded that other half measures will not solve the problem.

The fantasy that someone (who?) can identify mentally unstable future murderers and prevent them (how?) from obtaining weapons and committing crimes is delusional. Persons suffering from active psychosis (rarely, but sometimes dangerous) currently can not be compelled to receive treatment. If they have a blinding flash of insight, intake for voluntary appointments are usually several weeks into the future. Again, constitutional rights impair the ability of the community to protect itself. Few of these folks have a record that would prevent them from legally acquiring an AR-15.

If they’re going to take this approach to abortion…
Let states enact as strict gun control as they see fit. Blue states can take the European approach and ban ALL guns except those used by verified hunters.

If someone had the balls to overturn the filibuster and fix the SC as has been done before they could get things passed that would have some effect on this and many other problems...

… a tactical rifle with a high capacity magazine. 10 day waiting period, and you have to produce a simple form that verifies you have sat for a 20 minute interview with a person trained to evaluate mental health disorders.

Do you think this guy or guys like him would pass? How many would not do it because they are afraid they wouldn’t pass?

Gun fetish culture is.

There is no magic diagnostic tool that can identify high risk people. "Minority Report" is fiction...not even science fiction. Tom Cruize will not save us using pre-crime savants.

… health disorder and guns are a dangerous combination. No expert, but I suspect this kid was not well adjusted. Neither was Lanza. Neither was Paddock. Nor Seung-Hui Cho or James Holmes or even Charles Whitman back in 1966. Some likely had physiological ailments (I think Whitman was believed to have had a brain tumor - but I may be recalling that wrong and don’t have time to research it), but all MIGHT have been identified as a potential risk if someone with some training had actually looked at them and talked to them. Will it stop all of them? Of corse not. There will always be ways to work around the restriction. But even 1 less dead elementary school kid is worth it, right?

The gun humper culture warriors are certainly the problem in that they - as a constituency - prevent sensible gun restrictions. That’s spot on. But the reality is that most of them go into the woods and shoot targets training for the day someone like Obama comes for their guns. They really don’t often shoot up schools and grocery stores and concerts. They might shoot each other or themselves, perhaps, but they are cowards and LARPers for the most part. They might be the reason we can’t get laws passed, but they are not the immediate danger (usually). Just my $0.02.

Every time someone suggests a reform... look back at recent crimes and the reform wouldn't have done shit.

You're right... real reform is necessary.

How to do it, with the Constitution in place???

I don't know.

SCOTUS got it way wrong on the second amendment.

The founders drafted that language so that states could authorize militias...mostly to chase runaway slaves.

No absolute right for personal use of war weapons was intended. Through the lens of the 21st century, it is ludicrous.

They allow the Rs to set the narrative and they're always on the defense.

"Hell yeah, I want to take your AR15 away. Hell yeah I want to take your semiautomatic away."

They should be saying this instead of mealymouthed "common sense" bullshit.

gun nuts in my life. They literally dream of a scenario of being to kill a burgler, fight off 3-4 blacks invading their homes, etc. Plus they carry their guns in case of a "rumble" somewhere.....What fucking rumble!

their only tool is a hammer, and everything is a nail.
