(8,748 posts)I worked my whole life, served in the military, went to college, retired as an educator. I live off state retirement, SS and a tiny VA disability, 30 percent. In many peoples eyes my salary looks really weak, but Ive learned to live small. I can still help my daughter with Major home repairs, buy good wine and eat healthy. But I no way could afford to go buy two assault rifles, 7 clips that hold 30 rounds and hundreds of rounds, plus tactical gear. Most 18 years old are scraping to buy gas. Tell me how the hell an 18 year old high school drop out can just walk in and afford all that. How many of yall could fork out around $4,000 at 18 years old for guns while working at Micky Ds. And to show how efficiently deadly that gun is, how much practice did he even need to kill that many people and put the fear of God in trained masses of Guys (not so good in the eyes of parents screaming to do something) with artillery in 40 minutes.
In the military, you train train train, police train, train, train, especially tactical police. Here this kid with lots of spare cash can get all that, and kill as efficiently as a Navy Seal with minimal training.
But as Rep Fines from Florida said today, this is an acceptable price for freedom. He should have been sent in that class room with a bucket of soapy water and a paint scraper to clean up that acceptable mess of blood, bones, brain matter and body parts. He also threatened to kill the President if he even thought of taking his guns. Party of Jesus and Pro Life. Its time to bury the GQP instead of children and Seniors. Figuratively.

(17,252 posts)discovered he had used her credit/debit card to purchase the guns and was confronting
him about them. So he shot her and that sped up his timeline to commit mass murder.

(1,654 posts)Shooting someone deliberately in the face shows you are obliterating them. You don't want to look at them. Also, he announced on FB ahead of time that he was going to shoot her. Both things may be true.
But guns, especially military guns, are the surest way to murder or suicide. Poison, knives, etc. all have more effective treatment and a better chance of survival.

That doesn't mean the current situation is acceptable either.

I think I'd run the risk that an 18-year old Incel won't get that "creative" if he can't mosey on down to the local Gun Shop for a couple birthday MSSAs.

(21,484 posts)And he did not work alone. Besides Terry Nichols, he had connections with a militia in Michigan.
There are many people who could and would use explosives for mass murder.
We still should not be deterred from gun control because of the possibility of mass murder by explosions. But we should be prepared for the possibility, even likelihood, of explosions replacing guns.
Time for a "snitch law" to reward people for reporting suspicious gun or exposives activities.
maxsolomon
(33,345 posts)As noted elsewhere in this thread, steps have been taken to address the feasibility of constructing fertilizer bombs, as well.
Guns are far easier to obtain and use than any other method of mass slaughter. Given that America is absolutely saturated in semi-automatic firearms, it is extremely unlikely that America's teenage homicidal maniacs would turn to explosives any time soon, or ever.
Why bother? Just steal your Grandma's credit card and an MSSA with 300 rounds of explosive-tipped bullets are yours, with just a background check to clear. You never have to worry about paying it off; you're planning to be dead soon.
wnylib
(21,484 posts)You are correct that right now, as the laws stand, people can get their hands on an AR15 and ammo easily.
But I was addressing the earlier post about people turning to explosives IF gun control laws prevent access to multiple round, high speed guns.
maxsolomon
(33,345 posts)No guns are ever going to be grabbed. 20 million MSSAs are in circulation currently. Lord knows how many SA Handguns.
Multiple round, high speed guns are here for the duration, and they will be obtainable, legally or illegally.
wnylib
(21,484 posts)people like you take that attitude and promote it.
I stand with the people who refuse to stand by and whine that it is what it is and we cannot stop it.
We can choose where we stand on this and how we respond. I hope that most Americans choose more wisely.
maxsolomon
(33,345 posts)It's "people like me" that are the problem, not the millions and millions of rabid 2nd Amendment Absolutists who are liberalizing and suing and striking down gun laws, or buying arsenals and poncing about "defending" themselves and slapping "Molon Labe" stickers on their trucks.
What I'm "promoting" that we face the reality of the situation. We're decades away from any kind of rationality on firearms. I'll be long dead before a gun is grabbed, and I'm not 60.
Sorry, cynicism is warranted here. Shit is going the wrong direction, and has been for decades.
wnylib
(21,484 posts)you can't beat them (in your lifetime), then you might as well join them.
You complain that I am blaming you instead of the 2nd amendment gun addicts. You can't have it both ways. You want them blamed, but at the same time do not want to fight them because you say that it is futile.
Yes, I blame the gun addicts and especially the politicians who cater to them. But I also blame people who will not fight against them.
"All it takes for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing."
That is a slightly modified quote from Edmund Burke. The original says "good men" which I have modernized to "good people."

(163 posts)It was much easier to get explosives back then. Even McVeigh had to "get creative", and they've made it harder for that to happen since then.
