The AZ House passed an Education Gag Order yesterday. It's unconstitutional (more on that in a sec), but the gist is that it prohibits public K-12 schools and university ed schools from "providing instruction" on certain ideas related to race or ethnicity.

GOP 'critical race theory' ban would outlaw teaching about the alleged Buffalo shooter's racist...
A critical race theory ban would make it illegal for teachers to talk about why a white racist targeted Black people in a mass shooting.

Teachers should not be allowed to explain to their students that the mass murder in a Buffalo grocery story this month was allegedly committed by a white supremacist who targeted and killed Black people in a largely Black neighborhood and legislation approved Wednesday by Republicans would punish teachers who mentioned that.
Mesa Republican state Rep. Michelle Udall said it would not be appropriate to explain the motives behind those deaths in Arizona classrooms. And legislation she championed, Senate Bill 1412, would bar educators from teaching that casts blame based on race, ethnicity or sex in all Arizona public schools. That, she said, would include instruction on what happened in Buffalo.
If a teacher cant teach (history) without placing blame or judgment on the basis of race, they shouldnt be teaching, Udall said during debate of the bill in the Arizona House of Representatives.
Teachers who violate that would face discipline from the State Board of Education, and school districts could be fined up to $5,000.
The proposal would apply to K-12 schools, community colleges and Arizonas three universities: Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. It would also seemingly apply to guest speakers at any school and limit things like anti-racism training for teachers and school employees.

(4,035 posts)They know their party is useless. They know that they want authoritarian control, they have a deathly fear of minorities, and the only option left is to deny, deny, deny. Deny gun violence and its obvious remedy. Deny that voting is still safe and secure. I could go on for days, but we all know whats going on.
Im so furious. Despite my anger, its hard not to write something that will raise flags with the three digit departments, so I have to curb my anger. Its not easy.

(2,945 posts)begin teaching history (CRT) and do it every day at the same time, then wait to see what the State BOE does. Will they suspend all teachers en mass? Will they fire them en mass? It's obvious that the Rs want to shut down public schools and the teachers could make this happen.
There aren't enough private/charter school teachers or classrooms to accommodate the kids who are now going to public school, but to get a schooling the kids will be forced into charter schools. The thing is the funding for charter schools siphons off its funding from public schools and if there are no teachers for public schools, there's no more funding for public schools and so what happens to charter schools? But even more than that, a majority of the parents whose kids are in private/charter schools put their kids in those schools for them to be away from "public school kids."
I hope that AZ teachers stand and fight this one.
