Apparently, we're not doing something right when it comes to police training.

The entire country, including right-wingers, went through an entire rehaul of perspective after the George Floyd murder. At least, then they could all see what we've been saying for years: the police have a serious judgement problem when it comes to dark skinned civilians.

Then, the next problem. Many unarmed people with mental illness problems were killed by the police because the police misjudged the situation. So the conclusion: The police aren't trained to handle people with mental illness. Too often the police overreacted even when the person wasn't carrying a lethal weapon. So, the move is to get social workers involved with these kind of situations.

And now the next flaw in police training that I'm hearing on DU: Police aren't trained to deal with people carrying a military assault weapon, which, they claim, is why the cops waited 40 to 60 minutes outside of Robb Elementary. So, here, where they have the full approval of the public to mow down a domestic terrorist, we're finding out the police are not trained to do the job.

I'm flummoxed.

The only thing that can be concluded from this latest troubling detail, is that we have cleared the table of the Republican response that it takes a good guy with a gun to take down a bad guy with a gun. 'Cuz, if the police aren't trained to do it properly, neither is the Average person with a gun.

Dealing with that situation is 100% part of standard training across the codidn't. It's been the standard since Columbine to make entry and confront an active shooter immediately.

They were trained to handle it, they just didnt.

Not only does immediate entry limit the number of victims available to a shooter, but GSW survival is highly correlated to two things...location of injury and time to medical attention. 40 minutes makes survivable GSWs more deadly.

By the time this is over, the only people capable of doing this job when the bad guys are all armed with military weapons, are the Ukrainians. I would trust them to treat people right, more than our own conservative Anglo types.

And to acquire the mindset that a certain percentage of casualties are to be expected and accepted. The more important the mission, dealing with a mass shooter at a school for instance, the higher the accepted casualty rate. Might be damn near 100% in that situation.
