Tucker Carlson suggested that coronavirus pandemic lockdowns ― not guns ― were to blame for recent mass shootings in the U.S.
On Wednesday, the Fox News host tried to connect recent shooting massacres in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, to one of his favorite targets: COVID-19 mitigation measures.
Oh, so the lockdowns dramatically increase the incidence of mental illness among young people and in 10 days, weve seen two mass shootings by mentally ill young people. Could there be a connection? he asked. Now, thats not finger-pointing. Its not to blame [Dr. Anthony] Fauci for yesterdays shooting. Were not that low. Were not Joe Biden. But if people are becoming mentally ill because theyre disconnected from others, what can we do to connect them to others and thereby reduce the incidence of mental illness? Thats a real conversation.
The shooters in Buffalo and Uvalde used assault rifles they had purchased legally. Both men were 18. The Buffalo gunman killed 10 people at a supermarket in what authorities said was a racially motivated attack against the Black community. The Uvalde shooter killed 19 children and two teachers.

(16,254 posts)My reply would be that people are connecting with lots of others by attending funerals of those killed during mass shootings.
Can't something be done about Tucker and his bosses? Talk about mental illness.

(29,205 posts)lack of good guys with a gun - uh no, many trained good guys were there, with guns
video games - uh no, many cultures around the world play video games, but no school shooters
mental illness - well no, no evidence that this shooter was mentally ill... he may not have been quite right, but he wasn't mentally ill enough to have had any treatments or any known problems
now add the insanely stupid - lock downs - only we haven't been in a lock down for 2 years and even then you could travel to the grocery store or the pharmacy. Right now, even in California - masks are not required. This guy worked at the local Wendy's.
What is the one thing missing from this circus of explanations - guns

(3,860 posts)having to wear a mask and social distance for a while causes mental illness. Otherwise, what restrictions is he talking about? We had nothing compared to Europe and some Asian countries, but we're the ones with the shooters, not them.

(21,949 posts)It's not unreasonable to suggest that the pandemic has exacerbated mental health problems among young men, and increased the chance that they might snap and commit mass murder.
But KNOWING THAT, why are Republicans still arguing that we should make it as easy as possible for as many people as possible to get as many guns as possible?
