The shooter in Uvalde, TX shot 38 kids & adults; 21 died & 17 wounded. I watched this coverage & it was not until second day of coverage that the number wounded was released. Still not seeing the total # shot being mentioned. Are officials/politicians trying to control the story?

@29Sinclair
Wheres the updates on the 17 wounded & hospitalized. Why no regular status reports on their condition? Is this information being suppressed by officials & politicians?

Any lower number is better?. Is that the angle????

(9,998 posts)And like you said, the powers that be probably feel that a lower overall total # impacted makes it look less bad than it was.

(10,137 posts)about a month after it happened. They interviewed several of the people who were shot but survived. It was scary reading: those interviewed included people who were paralyzed by the gunshots and will never walk again, and would require extensive surgeries and therapies to have even a stab at a "normal" life again. We forget these people even more quickly than we forget the dead when the next week's shooter makes the headlines.

Why do YOU think it is being 'ignored'?

(2,832 posts)The OP suggested that the motivation for lack of coverage was that lower numbers are better.
It's the last line of the OP.
So I'm pretty sure that's the answer to your question, "Why do YOU think it is being 'ignored'?"
As for the giant conspiracy and racist part, well, I've no idea where that came from other than your fertile imagination.
maxsolomon
(33,345 posts)for such a giant coordinated media conspiracy. What would be the benefit of that? Who benefits?
And regardless, it's posed as a question.
My imagination is not the one that's fertile. DU is often awash is speculation like this.

(3,503 posts)I had assumed that the guy was only in one classroom, and murdered all the kids and teachers in that room. Seems pretty reasonable to wonder why that part of the story was not being covered.
And we know from the recent pandemic that Republicans tend to downplay numbers if it suits their agenda.

They didn't protect the school and the kids.

(35,345 posts)and no one gets injured seemed very strange. If it is true 38 were shot I have never heard that before. I have never seen one of these mass murders when injured victims are not even mentioned. It's always at least so many are dead and so many are in intensive care. Has the media been told to minimize the casualties by someone?

(2,636 posts)They stood on that stage like something out of a bad movie, all bluster and hoss and mob mentality.
Beto was Col Sherburn--coolly calling that mob out for the cowards they are.
"The pitifulest thing out is a mob; thats what an army isa mob; they dont fight with courage thats born in them, but with courage thats borrowed from their mass, and from their officers. But a mob without any man at the head of it, is beneath pitifulness.

(24,300 posts)was here before non-Latino European settlers. It's called California. My high school graduation ceremony in San Jose was done in two languages in '71. There are still many recent immigrants that don't have much command of the English language. What inspired my post was at the end of the press conference there was a Spanish speaking Journalist who was saying something and was ignored. It there is Latino press there, there are Spanish speaking people watching.

We need to be loud and emotional in our messaging like Beto- it works best.
We need to be relentless in calling out the lunacy of suggesting more armed people. Our histoy and the wild west is all we needd to know it does not work.

(8,748 posts)Covers or follows up on NON LIFE THREATENING injuries in any of these national shootings. Like it is no big deal. Just like all the Westerns were they get a bullet boo boo and everything is fine after ya put a bandana on it. In reality, those injuries could include, brain damage, shattered jaw where victim has a feeding tube for life, facial disfigurement, blinded, multiple organ damage, need a liver transplant, on dialysis for life, have a colostomy bag for life, shattered hip, knees, ankles and crippled for life, or in Rittenhouse murders, lose a limb. No big deal, no lose of life so everything is great. Show me a list of non life threatening injuries from guns. It will be triple at minimal of the annual deaths by guns.
And did ya see All those Cowboy hats with heavy armor and big guns, without a single ball in the crowd???? All Hat No Balls. The typical Republican asshole with a gun.

(6,265 posts)in MSM. They need to keep options open. They want the drama of the dead. The wounded? Just doesn't matter to these drama kings and queens. Plus they really don't want the average American armed with the whole truth and nothing but the truth. They always start spinning immediately. And people like Ingraham and Carlson are just evil, pathetic little worms.

(172 posts)and this is the first i heard of that, and I was just talking to a co-worker about this, no graphic on number wounded. To me, its pretty easy to pickup that Texas is the one playing politics with this. The day after this massacre, the guy from Texas Safety was on the today show and wouldn't even say the type of weapon was involved. It didnt take a rocket scientist to figure out it was an assault rifle and I was thinking 15 hours later and you cant identify the weapon by looking at it? Im googling this and am having a hard time getting a figure on the number shot, what gives?

(19,565 posts)It wasn't until today I finally saw an article on a San Antonio network mentioning the number of wounded. I knew there were wounded due to a report on one little girl who had surgery, survived and needs a second surgery. Yet, there has been zero mention of the other victims of the gunman.

How can they think ignoring the total number of victims was going to not be noticed?

(2,818 posts)First, it's Texas. And Abbot. And the NRA.
Second, we've had it up to --here-- with all these gun deaths of all kinds, but especially these insidious mass shootings. Everyone knows it. It's not just "own the libs"... it's owning the repugs, too. When the NRA is even afraid to have guns at their own conventions, you KNOW something is wrong! (LOL)
Third, there are no updates because this is Texas and Uvalde. Of course, it's racist. The kids are mostly, if not all, Hispanic. It doesn't make any difference if there first, second, third, or 10th generation American. They're still Hispanic. To make matters worse, the shooter is Hispanic. You've got people rooting for death all the way around. And maybe that's why this one hits me so hard. I love the Hispanic culture. My daughter and I were all but adopted into an Hispanic family after a very ugly divorce. Three generations under one roof... what were two more people living there! They made us feel like we had always been a part of the family. Other than the emphasis on the Catholic religion, I loved everything about the culture. We are so much poorer as people when we turn away from cultures other than our own. So much to learn; so much to know about ourselves and our past.
Abbott is probably hoping for a greater loss of life, IMO. If not loss of life, a greater number of deportations. He'd like to clear out all of the Valley. That way, he could build Trump's Wall and deploy any number of missiles or armaments. He doesn't like the fact there's movement of families from both sides of the border, Hispanic, black, mestizo, and white. It's all just too messy for him. And that's their whole problem.
They only see the whole world in colors of black and white. There are no shades of grey. Doesn't make any difference whether it's in terms of culture, people, or policy. It's either A or it's B. It's either Right or it's Left. It's either Correct or it's Wrong. There's no "if this" then "that". They brains can't handle situations that don't fit outside that type of paradigm. They can't think outside the box! They wouldn't know creativity if it came up behind them and bit them in the butt!!!

(42,770 posts)Never understood since I moved here... My husband's parents had illegals working on their ranch. So do lots of other people. Yet they are treated well in the community. Even got drivers licenses ( sure to help with ranching) no problem.
All that said, the very same people who seem to hate immigrants like Abbott et al are not doing anything to stop the ranchers from hiring illegals. They just turn a blind eye. But the other eye is sending troops to the border. This contradiction is so confusing.
