(130,972 posts)most would likely feel similarly, but rather mis-placed in their jobs; not many heroes around.

(424 posts)I have run into situations where people were fighting to break things up. That is much different to running into a situation where I could be shot.
Goes back to the root cause, it is guns along with the ignorant belief that the vast majority of people, including LE, are born heroes.

(10,136 posts)none of the handgun-rated bullet-resistant vests will stop rounds from any rifle.
Yes, there are vests rated for rifle rounds, but no one wears them all day due to the bulk and weight. The SWAT team carries those vests in the truck.

(51,308 posts)You do know that many of those cops had children in the school?
You do know that many of those cops were of the same color skin as the children, as other posters have pointed out in other threads?
Why keep doing this?
Emile
(22,789 posts)that this could be a reason. Who do those cops take orders from?
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)I think the leadership of those cops has a lot to answer for, but I don't think racism was involved.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)nothing to me. They allowed bleeding children who might have been saved with medical attention to lie in their own blood and did nothing...scum of the earth.

Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)enter the school...why not shoot him? And then did nothing for more than 40 minutes while children and their teachers bled to death...Moms gave their lives to save children and these cops did nothing. I hope they never have a peaceful day for the rest of their hopefully miserable lives.

(51,308 posts)Including the swat team. But hey, never mind that.
Which is it? You keep changing from racism to cowardice.
Its obvious the police fucked up, but its nothing to do with race.

(41,986 posts)Thats what they want, right? If those frantic, terrified parents had all been armed I fear to think what the outcome would have been. Because those cops would have killed them too.

(68,586 posts)is why they waited over 40 minutes before going in? Parents went in and rescued their kids themselves. These bastard cops handcuffed and in one case at least pepper-sprayed parents while allowing the murdering scum bag to kill children... was this because it was a school with many minorities in it?

(12,660 posts)The shift commander should have been there, worked out a strategy, and deployed his officers. Heck, I'm sure someone in the neighborhood could have sent up a drone with a go-pro within 15 minutes if they wanted to assess the situation from a distance without sending a pair of officers to the back of the school to scope out the situation as I was freaking taught to do if responding to hostage situations in 1981 for security training.
Instead, they all wanted to wait until it was "safe" or someone with more firepower could get there.

(13,186 posts)They have the duty to enforce and enact an established, trained procedure for an active shooter situation. It doesn't matter how it seems. Well-planned, well-trained procedures are created to minimize loss. It would actually be wrong for the cops to allow parents to enter the building and right for them to prevent it if that's what the trained-in, planned response calls for.
It doesn't seem right, but it might be as right as it can be when the wrong in the situation is this bad. If the first responders didn't follow orders or trained-in procedures, then, yeah, blame them for that. If there were no procedures or leadership was lacking, then, in these times, we need to ask why.
I just don't think it's a good idea to take blame away from the obvious suspects, the gun industry, the NRA, and the now wholly morally unmoored Republican Party. They'd like us to blame the cops or anyone but them.
