West mulls having Russian oligarchs buy way out of sanctions

BERLIN (AP) — Western allies are considering whether to allow Russian oligarchs to buy their way out of sanctions and using the money to rebuild Ukraine, according to government officials familiar with the matter.

Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland proposed the idea at a G-7 finance ministers' meeting in Germany last week.

Freeland raised the issue after oligarchs spoke to her about it, one official said. The Canadian minister knows some Russian oligarchs from her time as a journalist in Moscow.

The official said the Ukrainians were aware of the discussions. The official said it's also in the West’s interests to have prominent oligarchs dissociate themselves from Russian President Vladimir Putin while at the same time providing funding for Ukraine.

They are an integral part of the government that is threatening the world with nukes. Fuck the Russian Oligarchs. Reduce sanctions when they reduce Putin to dust and get to hell out of Ukraine. Then they should have to finance the rebuilding of Ukraine to ever rejoin the world economic and social community. These Oligarchs are just a bunch of gangsters who are used to buying, threatening, bullying or killing their way out of any problems. They probably have the fix in on the mentioned "discussions." Of course our Western oligarchs will be supporting the Russians, there is just too much money in play. There is far more greed in the world than honor.

It should only be the Ukrainian government and people who get to decide under what conditions that sanctions are lifted. Let the Russians eat their worthless rubles and keep them away from the cultural and entertainment centers of the world. They can be Russians in Russia until they make as full amends as is possible.

The oligarchs must pay for the rebuild one way or the other.

Totally unfair for Americans to have to pay most of the re-build costs when it is Russian responsibility to fix what it damaged.
