Abbott is still giving pre-recorded remarks to the NRA. Beto will be protesting at the NRA event and it may that Greg is afraid of Beto

The governor faced heavy criticism for his decision to attend the event following the massacre. He was scheduled to speak alongside former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, but he will now deliver pre-recorded video remarks, Abbott spokesman Mark Miner said.
Instead, Abbott will travel to Uvalde for another press conference on state resources available for those impacted by the Robb Elementary School shooting. The event will take place at 3:30 p.m., shortly after the governor was set to address NRA attendees.
It will be Abbotts second news conference in Uvalde after Tuesdays shooting. During the first on Wednesday, Abbott rejected any efforts to restrict gun access, instead saying lawmakers should focus on expanding mental health resources in rural areas.

it's pure optics, although it is interesting seeing that the same GOP post-mass shooting playbook ain't working right now

Abbott will not physically attend and speak at the NRA convention but he will deliver pre-recorded video remarks, Abbott's wink and nod to the NRA...because Beto "pantsed" Abbott in real time while the world watched, he has little choice but to show feigned sympathetic solidarity with the people of Uvalde, when, in fact, his heart (if he has one) belongs to the gun lobby..

(7,865 posts)that amputates the wrong leg, says he's damn sorry, but promises the next time he'll get it right...Abbott's paean to the gun lobby killed 19 children and 2 adults in Uvalde, Texas.. Friday's visit is a do-over...a promise to shed a tear when appropriate...
