Confronting the "democrats want to legislate morality" BS.

When I was getting my mail yesterday, a neighbor walked by with her dog. She stopped to say hello and then launched in to the leaked abortion ruling. For context, she knows full well I'm a bleeding heart godless heathen of a liberal, and I know she's batshit crazy. She's been baiting me for years and I just walk away to keep peace in the neighborhood. Yesterday, she hit my limit.

Disclaimer: Obviously this isn't verbatim, I'm just trying to get as close as I can remember.

I interrupted her. "Karen (yes folks, that is her real name), you know full well I am pro-choice and you are not about to change my mind. I know you're anti-choice and have no chance of changing yours. Why do you keep this up?"

She said something about God's calling to her to witness to others or some such gibberish.

I responded that was a large part of the problem. She's forcing other people to conform to her religious beliefs and no matter how devout she was, it was wrong to of her to do that. So of course I got the inevitable, "well democrats are legislating their morality with gay marriage, CRT, etc." That was when I'd had enough and let it out.

Here's the difference you need to grasp, Karen. Republican policies and legislation strip rights and literally kill people. Democratic policies expand rights and protect people.

Pro-choice doesn't force you to have an abortion.
Pro-marriage equality doesn't force anyone to marry someone against their will.
Pro-voting rights doesn't disenfranchise you.
Pro-welfare programs doesn't take the food off your table.

If democrats were legislating our morality we'd be passing laws that forced home owners with a spare bedroom to house a homeless person. If democrats were legislating our morality we'd be passing laws that forced anyone not working full-time to volunteer two days a week at their local food bank. But we don't do that, do we?

Sorry Karen, you don't get to claim the moral high ground here when you force women to give birth but aren't willing to feed that child and won't do anything to protect the child from getting shot when it reaches school age.

You want a christo-fascist white nationalist hellscape. Democrats just want a fucking democracy where everyone is treated equally under the law. Your dog shit on my lawn, make sure you pick it up. At that I just took my mail back into my house and closed the door.

For those of you thinking, "I'll take something that never happened for 1,000, Alex," I don't blame you. But this did happen and this is a pretty faithful rendering of the exchange. I've been having imaginary conversations in my head with this neighbor for close to ten years. So it's been pretty well rehearsed and only needed a little nudge to dump from my brain onto my tongue. I'm so sick of this shit!

about "god calling them to witness", is THE most offensive thing they do. That's what causes them to think they are doing god's will when it comes to outlawing abortion, marriage equality, books, etc.

Sorry. I'm so sick of it. I might start replying with, "Fuck you and your Santa Claus".

I figured I got her attention with the "F word." I never swear around her so that raised her eyebrows demonstrably.

some of my right wing relatives spout.

We are the ones legislating morality by allowing people to make their own medical decisions, let them love who they love, and taking care of "the least among us".

Meanwhile, they want to stop anyone from doing anything they don't like...

If she brings up anything to do with the Rapture, tell her it already happened and she got 'left behind' too. They hate that.

Their persistent proselytizing is offensive. Even the Jehovah Witnesses know when it's time to get back on their bikes and leave. But these damned Evangelical Baptists, and their ilk, want to tell you how to run your life during unannounced social calls while also expecting tea and a biscuit. Give me a break.

The Christian right isn’t trying to legislate morality?

Every time they accuse us of something they are qctually confessing.

Seem like a sweet, elderly couple, very smiley, friendly and outgoing.

Have been at my door, uninvited and unexpected, four times in the last week. I politely but clearly turn them away, but they just keep coming back. The last straw was when the lady actually put her foot in my door and insisted on coming inside because she was "worried" about me.

Against my nature, I blew up, told them to leave and not come back. They just kept smiling and nodding even as I slammed the door in their faces. So far, they haven't come back.
