In the aftermath of the deadliest school shooting in a decade, many have asked what more could have been done how an 18-year-old who spewed so much hate to so many on the Web could do so without provoking punishment or raising alarm.
*****
He could be cryptic, demeaning and scary, sending angry messages and photos of guns. If they didnt respond how he wanted, he sometimes threatened to rape or kidnap them then laughed it off as some big joke..
But the girls and young women who talked with Salvador Ramos online in the months before he allegedly killed 19 children in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, rarely reported him. His threats seemed too vague, several said in interviews with The Washington Post. One teen who reported Ramos on the social app Yubo said nothing happened as a result.
Some also suspected this was just how teen boys talked on the Internet these days a blend of rage and misogyny so predictable they could barely tell each one apart. One girl, discussing moments when he had been creepy and threatening, said that was just how online is.

What is the solution for this? I have nothing. Where is all this hate coming from in a person so young?

It pissed me off, since the admins were self-described liberals. I quit.

(9,916 posts)'There's This Really Consistent Pathway': How Society Can Stop Mass Shooters Before They Act
It's a summary of a longer article, TOTALLY worth reading, at politico

Two Professors Found What Creates a Mass Shooter. Will Politicians Pay Attention?
Mass shooters overwhelmingly fit a certain profile, say Jillian Peterson and James Densley, which means its possible to ID and treat them before they commit violence.
Opinion: hate comes from societal "norms".
Hate has been "normalized".
For the motivation behind this, that's a bigger question.

There's a pattern to all this.
I give some excellent references on the oligarchic plot to weaken government.
Short version is that chaos means weak government, and that means little or no regulation of oligarchs. Period.

(32,113 posts)In a perfect world, each school would have a school psychologist and troubled kids would get the help they need. I get that. But
.
Would it create even more stigma for the affected student if everyone knew he was regularly seeing the school psychologist? Would all the other kids brand him as a psycho?
Or this scenario
.
Kid comes from an abusive/dysfunctional home. Kid shows mental health problems in school. Red flags all over the place. Teacher flags him for session with school psychologist. Kid goes home, tells parents theyre making him see a psychologist in school. Angry macho father storms down to the school and tells them how dare they single out his kid as a psycho and to discontinue counseling sessions this minute. No kid of mine is going to see some wussy shrink who will turn him into a snowflake. School cant continue sessions if parent vehemently opposes it. Kid probably gets beaten up when father gets home.
My husband is a retired high school teacher and he saw many of these kinds of parents during his career. My kid is never wrong. Its the teachers fault. Its the schools fault. I pay your salary so you have to do what I say. Ill give him something to cry about when I get home. Etc. etc.
And finally, these last two mass shooters had no prior run ins with the law, so they could legally buy automatic weapons upon turning 18. I dont know why the age to purchase cant be raised to 21. Its a start. I know they just tried that in California and a judge ruled it was unconstitutional.
Another reckless ruling that will end lives, for sure.

Agree in the sense that schools are a microcosm of the surrounding culture, and nobody likes to be called out. I asked to go to a private high school because of the danger to smart kids, and that was the time of "Blackboard Jungle"
It was mostly college prep for senior foreign students, and no foolin around except after classes. There was a park nearby and one of the baseball teams was jovially the Yanqui Imperialistas. It was a blast being exposed to many different cultures in high school, and zero status seeking. Anti conformity in a way, and people got to express themselves. Headmaster was a former Navy Captain and the French teacher was pretty much a communist. Not to ramble, but kids need diversity, and as far as extra help, I think it should be across the board help, so kids don't get "stamped", but I don't run things.
More later, if I can focus on your points. Was super busy today, and sunset might be a good one.

(13,620 posts)That's the underlying fact here and it has been almost since the beginning of the Internet. Want to cut the online threats and harassment? Eliminate anonymous posting. Want to cut bulk spam email? Charge an insignificant fee for each message like 1/10 of a cent. It's certainly not an intractable problem. But there's too much money to be made by not taking such steps.
