It sounds like these kids could have used a few hippies, for all the help the local constabulary gave them.

(22,723 posts)It's clear that what they needed they couldn't possibly get. The so-called first responders not only failed spectacularly as the loss of life reveals. They also destroyed enormous amounts of social capital they had and that will never be replaced.
There will be deep psychic wounds that will never heal. It's not only individual trauma that will tear each person affected apart. The collective betrayal will destroy the community ties that had been holding them together. When trust and respect are lost like that how do you get them back?

(14,446 posts)Please no comments on 'it's them, not us'. It is us as a country and it's our responsibility to change this thru our voting, donating to sane political candidates, boycotting corporations who are sponsoring these Republican Senators and House Members, and buying ads on FoxNews, which an anti-American organization. We need to do our part, however small, even if it costs us in time/money/effort to do it. Saying this is only about the other side is not productive. I personally am done with this. Everyone needs to stand up and say, Enough!
