is doing a segment on the AR15 because of our latest School MASSACRE. I'm sure they're not going
to be encouraging people to go out and buy one, likely the opposite......Why do people need one?
Should be a must watch for 2A lovers.
When talking to others, please use the term "MASSACRE" instead of "shooting", that's more correct,
ask gun humpers when they think the next "WALMART MASSACRE" will happen.

(21,109 posts)I have heard experts say that when the bullet from one hits it's subject, it's like having a grenade go off in the body. If you are hunting to eat, you don't want that happening. If you are hunting people, I suppose you do, right?

(17,293 posts)Animal hunters would never use it because of meat loss, it's sole purpose is to kill people with 1 round.
My local online TV guide said they will be talking about the bullet.

(4,131 posts)With different construction methods, designs, and components all for different intended applications.
A full metal jacket .223 / 5.56 will not explode on impact like a grenade going off. In fact, a full metal jacket will just pencil through an animal doing minimal damage and leading to a very slow, painful death, make tracking very difficult (blood trails are typically more pronounced with larger exit wounds), which means the animal would almost certainly not be recovered by the hunter and the meat would be wasted. Full metal jackets are common target rounds.
There are many different types of bullets constructed specifically for hunting. Some have lead cores, some are solid copper, but almost all of them are designed to balance expansion and penetration, in order to maximize the lethality and minimize meat damage. This includes .223 / 5.56 rounds fired by the AR.
The .223 / 5.56 is not typically used for deer hunting and I would not recommend it for such to novice hunters, though there are many backpackers who do use the .223 / 5.56 loaded with proper hunting grade ammunition and who are skilled enough to place their shot where they will secure a clean, ethical kill.
But the .223 / 5.56 is regularly used to ethically hunt small and medium sized game such varmints, coyotes, feral pigs, and even pronghorn. With the proper bullet construction and shot placement, its a perfectly adequate hunting round for those types of game.
The .223 / 5.56 is also a common chamber for many other types of rifles including bolt action, lever action, and even pump action rifles.
And ARs chambered in popular hunting cartridges, such as the .308 Winchester, are of course just as effective as their bolt action cousins chambered for the same round.
All this is to say that its misleading to try to paint the AR as a poor choice for hunting. There are certainly types of ammunition that could be used in the AR (or any other rifle type) which are inappropriate for hunting, but there are reliable and effective hunting ammunition options for the AR (or any other rifle type).
The type of .223 / 5.56 that would go off like a "grenade" is actually what you'd want to use for home defense ammunition to ensure that your bullet does not over penetrate into the rest of your house or your neighbor's house. That type of highly frangible ammunition is what responsible home defenders use to minimize the risk to innocent people they cannot see behind walls.
Unfortunately, other common home defense weapons, such as a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot or slugs, suffer from extreme over penetration and create undue risk to neighbors and household members. They should not be used or recommended by anyone for the purpose of home defense.

It's very informative. There's absolutely NO reason for a private citizen to own one of those murder machines.
