General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThis Memorial Day weekend, I'll once again remember pinboy3niner.
I will visit my Dad's gravesite at Arlington tomorrow. I love him, and will always honor his memory.
But I will also honor a man I never actually met face-to-face.
Pinboy was an eloquent spokesman for vets, and veteran's causes. He traveled far and wide speaking out for his fellow grunts.
But more than that, he was my brother. He had been there.
We PM'd each every now and then, and also conversed occasionally on the board itself. We discovered that we had both served in the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles!), and had chewed some of the same Vietnamese dirt, just three years apart. We were both wounded, but both made it home.
HOOAH.
He was one Hell of a man, and I salute him, today, tomorrow, and forever.

(23,251 posts)Only knew him thru DU. Very few people have shown themselves able to out-pun me, but he was one of them--probably the best. His contribution to the immortal door-buzzard thread is the stuff of legends, and rightfully so.
RIP, pinboy3niner! You were one helluva man! Here's to ya, dude!

(86,650 posts)But he sure was funny here.
I loved when he got a string of puns going that got sillier as they went along... and we laughed our asses off.

(12,545 posts)POEM BY MAJOR MICHAEL DAVIS ODONNELL
WRITTEN ON JANUARY 1, 1970 AT DAK TO
Who died in a helicopter crash in Cambodia in March 1970
If you are able, save them a place inside you,
And save one backward glance when you are leaving,
for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say you loved them,
though you may, or may not have always.
Take what they have left, and what they have
taught you with their dying, and keep it as your own.
And in that time that when men decide, and feel safe,
to call the war insane, take one moment,
to embrace these gentle heroes you left behind.

(3,557 posts)I dont wish to shift the focus of this thread to me, but as a veteran who has lost friends and fellow Soldiers in war, this poem strikes a chord for me today.

(1,200 posts)To him. & our vets.
I didn't know him, but the first time read the archived door buzzard, was crying--like tears streaming--laughing.
There's nothing like reading something so enchantingly funny, and wondering about the people behind the posts.
Then everything that has been written about him on DU from time to time, he sounded like a very special guy.

(1,313 posts)My Dads ashes are in a crypt at Punchbowl National Cemetery. A three war man and Eisenhower Republican, I worry he doesnt rest easy.
What am I saying? Hes spinning in his grave with other defenders of democracy and human decency who suffered for the ease we have known and whos expectations are at risk. Those fuckers kicked ass and what are we doing with what they gave us?

(3,557 posts)I looked up to him in a lot of ways. We were both Infantry Platoon Leaders, but fought in different wars in different eras (I was in Iraq, 2004).
Seeing him live a fulfilling life despite what he went through in the war has given me a lot of hope that I can do the same.

As a SE Asia vet myself (Army '72-'75) I salute all the veterans, those who made it home, and especially today, those that didn't.

(1,945 posts)I so admired this man. He and I exchanged a few PMs about vets and PTSD, and he had some great insights. (My husband is a VN vet) He was also involved with the traveling wall.
And as a punster he was unsurpassed. Miss you PB.
