Those of you who claim that you need to exercise your Second Amendment rights in order to defend yourselves and your fellow citizens against tyranny, please be advised that no one puts any credence in your ability to do so.
The sane among us have no desire to be 'protected' by a bunch of yahoos who are too cowardly to go to the grocery store without packing heat, too intimidated by grandma walking her dog to drive down the street without displaying your weapons in the gun-racks of your pickup, and too god-damned stupid to comprehend that your Confederate-flag festooned vehicles are a symbol of the losing side of a war lost long ago.
'Tyranny' has come, over and over, in the form of mass shooters who have mowed down mall shoppers, concert attendees, nightclub partiers, county fair participants - and schoolrooms full of defenseless children.
And through it all, your ability to combat this tyranny has been non-existent. In fact, your response has invariably been to persist in your claims that you and your weapons are at-the-ready to protect the already dead.
Please understand that no one of sound mind believes they are being "protected" by people who attend NRA conventions where firearms are prohibited out of fear of the very firearms they claim are safe in the hands of law-abiding citizens.
No one with a functioning brain believes that they are being "protected" by people who can't trust their fellow NRA members not to slaughter them in an auditorium full of "good men with guns".
If you can't protect schoolchildren from mass murderers, it's pretty fuckin' obvious that your claims of protecting anyone are nothing more than the useless cries of flaccid-dicked, mentally-deficient idiots who believe that being gutless while children are slaughtered is a sure sign of manhood.

(4,306 posts)It was the REAL Republicans (Abe Lincoln, Thaddeus Stevens, Ulysses S. Grant) who DEFEATED the Confederacy! Abe Lincoln started out as a Whig, which was the 17th-19th century version of liberals. The Whig party sort of died out (I am not a good enough historian to understand how), and the Republican Party was formed as a more modern (mid-19th century) version. Abe Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant had not had much contact with Black people growing up, but they showed the ability to learn, change, and grow, as they came into contact with various Black people. They showed the ability to READ and ABSORB the scientific data of their day, and eventually fought to free the slaves. My abolitionist ancestors held up my 6-year-old great-grandmother to shake Abe Lincoln's hand as he rode the train to claim the Presidency, because they could tell he would free the slaves. And they knew who the real thugs were in this country. The pro-slavery people made several attempts on Abe LIncoln's life as he made his way to the White House after his election, because they could tell it, too. Abe Lincoln warned against allowing the rich capitalists to have too much power, and he described the immense contribution of the working class to our properity. His Second Inauguaral speech is inscribed on the Lincoln Memorial, and everybody should read it. Ulysses S. Grant spoke in favor of voting rights for the Black ex-slaves, and described the Black people who had joined up with the Union army as intelligent and diligent. The modern Republican Party is a bizarre mockery of everything the first REAL Republicans stood for!

(17,381 posts)Starting with Andrew Jackson and even well into the 20th Century with Woodrow Wilson. It was with FDR that the Democratic Party started becoming the party of Civil Rights, which persists today. The racist southern Democrats began bolting from the party in the 1940's, and the "boll weevil" Democrat is an extinct species now.

(36,829 posts)Today's official republican position - Lincoln was our nation's greatest leader
From the 2004 GOP Platform - (I have not seen them change it.)
"One hundred and fifty years ago, Americans who had gathered to
protest the expansion of slavery gave birth to a political Party that
would save the Union - the Republican Party.
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln of Illinois carried the Republican banner
in the Presidential election and was elected the Party's first
President. He became our nation's greatest leader
and one of our
Party's greatest heroes. "
Many of today's republicans, especially Southern Heritage types, do not like the truth.

(4,306 posts)You say that you own a gun to protect yourself. My husband and I also own guns. We follow safety rules and act responsibly and with self-regulation. We try to be the well-regulated militia mentioned in the US Constitution. If you are a responsible gun owner, then few Democrats would have a quarrel with you.
