For those Democrats that say they won't vote if they only get $10k loan forgiveness...

Unrolled thread
https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1531078765589106695.html

THREAD: If Biden forgives $10K in student debt, and you have decided you won’t vote for democrats because you want $50K, I have a favor to ask. And I’m being 100% serious. 1/

Call up a parent of a slaughtered student or a loved one at Robb or in Buffalo, or a family member of someone at Sandy Hook or Colorado or AME, and tell them you’ve decided to help elect republicans who will keep allowing mass murders because you didn’t get enough debt relief. 2/

Then speak to a friend that’s a member of the LGBTQ+ community and explain to them how you’d really like to help preserve their right to marry who they love but you just can’t because you *only* got $10K free dollars. 3/

Then I’d like to you chat up a rape survivor. We all know one. Tell that person that as much as you’d love to vote for more democrats to protect Roe, you simply can’t be bothered because you deserve $50K instead of only 10. 4/

After that, you should call up a teacher you know and inform them that you’d rather see them underpaid and armed than have to vote for the democrats because they wouldn’t give you $50K. 5/

Then speak to a Dreamer. Any young amazing immigrant here since they were babies and you’re super sorry that your actions will probably mean they’ll be deported to a country they’ve never been to whose language they probably don’t speak but you won’t stand for a $10K gift. 6/

Then call a parent who has lost a beautiful trans child to suicide because they couldn’t talk about themselves or their families in school and let them know why you’re supporting the other side this time. Because that’s what this is. Not voting is a vote for republicans 7/

Just look any of them in the eye and justify your reasons for not being able to pick up a pen and vote on their behalf this time around. That you have to turn your back on them because you still have some loans to pay that you’re gonna have to pay anyhow if you help the GOP. 8/

Or maybe just ask them if that would be okay. See if they understand. Maybe explain how important it is to you.

Of COURSE I want $50K in debt forgiven, but am I gonna sell out everyone I love if we don’t get it? Fuck no, I won’t. 9/

And ABSOLUTELY advocate for more debt relief if that’s what you want. Call or write to Biden and your reps and demand more. But before you advocate for not voting, I BEG you to take a moment and think about how your actions will impact someone other than yourself. END

But, short and simple, that's $10,000 more help than any previous administration has done for you. And if you're really angry, please be sure you're angry at the right people. It isn't the Democrats who have limited the program to $10,000; it's the Republicans. If you want to see more done, get to the polls and vote for Democratic candidates. They'll be the ones who get more done. Just as silence in the face of injustice serves the oppressors, sitting out the election serves Republican interests.

Some congress and senate critters are wailing that it is a slap in the face.

Some people are saying that giving them 10K is like standing outside a closed door while children are being shot and doing nothing. Yes, that has been said. They equate student loans to murdered children. Some equate it to to slavery. Yep, slavery.

I can't even anymore.

I have heard the argument that larger debt relief may motivate higher turnout among young voters, but I haven’t heard anyone suggesting that young voters should withhold their votes if 50k in forgiveness doesn’t happen.

Two very different things.

Democrats want Democratic candidates to be elected, and therefore they vote for said Democratic candidates.

Sometimes people who aren't Democrats choose to vote for Democratic candidates, but we should never depend upon receiving their votes.

It is a non-stop drumbeat and they lay the fault entirely at the doorstep of the Democrats. And whatever they get will not be enough to satisfy them. It is so comically over the top that it feels like Russian bots to me.

Is the idea to try to demonize students/former students who need debt relief?

Is the idea to try to shame those purportedly complaining activists (unspecified though they be) for attempting to fight so that their needs are not just cast off to satisfy any Joe-Manchin-or-Kyrsten-Sinema-like impulses that might exist in the White House?

Did "MuellerSheWrote" just need something to post on Twitter to try to stay relevant?

Why even make such a divisive post (here or on Twitter), one that's in essence hippie-punching?

The point is simply this. If you want to say we need to add gun reform I’m with you. Don’t belittle an issue someone else cares about, and don’t try to emotionally manipulate people.

It’s dishonest and gross. This post by the twitter user was belittling and emotionally manipulative. Given that this has been a problem for over 20 years. Columbine happened when I was a freshman. We do this dumb song and dance every time a school gets shot up.

Enough of them to hand the electoral college vote to Donald J. Trump.

I watched that happen. We all watched that happen.

You are incorrect.

Democrats haven't done enough for us so don't vote for them.

Wasn't specifically about student loans, this was aimed at black voters, but same thing: targeting younger voters new to politics to become cynical enough not to vote. Bad enough to see it on social media, but here it is on the MSM nightly news. In 2016 this kind of targeting worked, not so much in 2020, and now it's back for the midterms. The idea that everyone threatening not to vote are trolls is wrong.

It’s like people have no idea what this stuff looks like. No sense of self-consciousness or self-awareness.

“Your child is dead? That sucks. So, wanna take this opportunity to take shots at student loan people with me?”

It’s so gross.

They’re children, not props for whatever intraparty managerial complaint of the week.

Why can’t people just be normal? For once?

It is not going to happen I think that the majority of the people who need it and were hopeful have given up that hope. While $10k is better then a sharp stick in the eye it is not enough for many of the college debt holders anyway. If you hold up the carrot in front of the donkey long enough without letting him eat it the donkey will eventually stop chasing it.

"For those who consider themselves on the left...." rather than Democrats. I doubt anyone who considers themselves a Democrat would do this.

Because there are people who consider themselves on the left yet hate Democrats, and they're the type to do this kind of shit. Nothing the Democrats in office do will be good enough and they are selfish enough to punish everyone else because they don't get what they personally want.

A lot of people are going to be pissed if Joe does pass student loan relief. I’ve talked to ALOT of people that have expressed this and I’m not sure I’ve talked to anyone that is very excited about it. They’d take it but aren’t sure why they should get it.
