who gave their lives, or passed away in the last 12 months for our country. The perimeters of their deaths were vague, combat or not, Nascar left it vague?
Anyway they have this Memorial Day tribute going on honoring lost service members, in all wars ('just' or not) Iraq wasn't and shouldn't of happened. Vietnam, Afghanistan etc? I could see WW2 yeah fighting off fascism, but here we are again in 2022 trying to fight it off again this time in our own country against our own countrymen with ballots so far and not bullets ....
Anyway for some reason I defaulted to the number 19 again, 19 kids blown away a few days ago for our so called "2nd amendment rights" and that was just in one day, not 12 months.
I read a few years ago that we lost more kids in 2018 to gun violence then service members that year in combat. And I somehow think that trend has continued.
Anyway at this rate maybe we should have a "2nd Amendment Day" ... honoring all the kids that lost their lives for that 'freedom' we all enjoy. Nascar can read all their names throughout the day, name the school shooting they died in, put the kids pics and names on the cars, have a race ... bbq ... good old family day ... enjoy the weather etc ...
Alright I got nothing else ... just some thoughts in momoriam for our lost service members and the kids this Memorial Day eve. Peace out and goodnight DU... doublethink.

(667 posts)I guess I'm confused about this part:

Memorial Day is a holiday to honor servicemembers who died in action - and yes, I believe all wars should be included, whether they were just or not.

(6,823 posts)and yes your reading comprehension is lacking if that's what you thought I posted. Goodnight.

(667 posts)I even quoted your remark. It sounds like you believe that we should only honor those who died in World War II - and not those wars you deem unjust. I disagree.

(6,823 posts)'Think' and 'sounds like' are subjective interpretations and way off on your part of what I said. Maybe from some pre-concieved notion or agenda you are trying to convey? I give up ... ha yeah you even "quoted my remark" ... and?

(667 posts)You had an opportunity to clarify and you didn't.
I asked if you had a problem with their honoring fallen soldiers in 'all wars (just or not)' as you said - and then you listed off wars you felt weren't justified. I was confused about whether you felt honoring those who died in Vietnam was inappropriate (since you specifically called out the justification of WWII). That's all.

(6,823 posts)and we don't disagree on honoring all lost veterans on Memorial Day, whatever the war was. Got ya, point was some lost their lives in un-just wars that didn't have to happen. That was the point in the quote you copy and pasted. Like kids are losing their lives on a stupid outdated 2nd amendment. The didn't have to die, none of them.
What are your thoughts on the 2nd amendment? And welcome to DU !!! All the best.

(54,027 posts)If someone puts on a uniform, they're taking on all the risks that go with the service. Whether they're shot by an insurgent in a country we're stationing military advisors in or they crash a jeep on duty on an air base in Greenland or they suffocate in a kitchen fire aboard an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean, they've died taking the risks that come along with serving the security needs of the Republic. All these sacrifices are costly, necessary, and honorable.
