She was a mother.
How painful it must have been for her to see what was done to her child. To look at his body so mauled and brutalized.
Her courage.
Her decision: "Leave that casket open. I want the world to see what they did to my baby."
It could not have been easy.
Those photographs were horrific, the reality must have been unbearably wrenching.
But that decision, that moment, and those photographs made an important difference.
Sometimes people, even caring people, who are comfortable in their own reality, need to have a taste of others' realities.

she allowed us all to carry the Burdon with her .. along side of her..

(681 posts)And hope that the rage of those parents will be aimed squarely at the nation that failed them forcing us to see the effect of our lust for power, our greed, our denial, our racism, our heartlessness, our brokenness. May the parents have the courage to show this country their child who was obliterated by our failure to care enough to act.

(70,135 posts)i think this time will be different. we might not see crime scene photos, or autopsy photos, but open casket funerals are a distinct possibility.
