So when a person says "Don't do gun control, because a mentally ill person would just find a way to kill with a knife, a baseball bat, or a rock", but yet they go for the deadliest way first? A mentally ill person, who by the name "mentally ill", throws cost-benefit analysis, rational choice, normal perception out the window but yet still choose to kill with a gun? While those things may be lacking, there are ways mentally ill people are just like everyone else. They can still be intelligent, they can still be creative, and they can still solve problems.
So it leads me to think that a mentally ill person would be the first one to find a way to kill 20 people with a knife, a baseball bat, or a rock.
The fact that you don't see mentally ill people killing scores of people with non-guns suggests... it's the guns.

(13,920 posts)I think its us. Our country. The way we venerate a twisted libertarian philosophy as a nation. Take away our guns, we will use explosives. Take away our explosives, we will use cars. The guns make it easier, and we should put a lot of common sense gun control in place and then actually enforce the rules.. but the problem will still exist, because it has deep roots in our culture.

(50,955 posts)Most aren't big doers with a track record of successfully executing complicated plans.
They're not going to go to the trouble to do the things you're talking about.
The gun has a cache to them. It's easily accessible, it is their "manhood card", it takes little effort.
A car doesn't make them feel manly.
They can't buy explosives over the counter down the street.
There would still be the obnoxious impulses in our culture, but there wouldn't be the slaughter.

(13,920 posts)Americans have a solid track record of murdering Americans, well before the modern guns like the AR-15 existed.
Will gun control help reduce the numbers? Sure. We need to do it. But it will still leave us with a culture that has the sickness of libertarian philosophy held close to its heart.

The losers have anger, frustration, and no hope for their own future.
Bigger fish use the hate and chaos for their evil ends.
Requiring insurance to own and possess an AR15 would be a start.

The rot goes deep America.
Very deep.

(5,844 posts)Stop playing into their narrative. Mentally ill people are statistically more likely to be victims of gun violence, not perpetrators.
And the other side knows this perfectly well. It's time we acknowledge reality and stop falling into their false narratives.

(17,553 posts)WWII and Korean soldiers, cowboys (lots of cowboys) TV detectives. You were less than a man if you couldn't fast draw.
Lucas McCain, the kind and caring father, must have killed a cemetery full of men. Marshall Dillon killed the same man to start every episode, every week. Gill Favor and Rowdy Yates shot people by the dozens. The Lone Ranger only shot to wound, so he was a lesser hero. They replaced the cowboys with cops and detectives that were always armed and dangerous. That kind of socialization left a mark on the generation. We did our best to pass it on. You can thank us later.
