just fiercely protective and laser focused. But, yeah, I do see these folks as brave. I guess when you're right in the middle of it, you do what must be done and after, others can and do call you brave. That feels right. These are brave and good nurses.

That's the first (and hopefully last) time I ever had to use the evacubaby jacket. We got everyone out of there in record time. The thing that took the longest was finding a place that could take us in for the 9 months it took to rebuild the unit!

I keep thinking "great for the kids in cribs, not on IVs and oxygen, but the kids still in isolettes and on vents and fluids...whew! You can't just design a NICU on the fly like that, although strange things happen when necessity and drive come together from dedicated professionals like you did! Thanks to you too!

Necessity is the mother of invention and nurses are, as you know, the very best at putting baling wire and gum together to make a ventilator or any other thing needed on the fly (I joke about the ventilator).

The biggest piece of luck we had was that our ventilated babies were in a different section so we could wait there with them until the other babies were safe and then respiratory, the nurses and the NNP used the neopuffs while they moved those ones. I only had six squirmy, cute, feeder and growers, slightly damp. I, on the other hand was soaked. It was a huge pipe that burst.

Six babies to a nurse if necessary.

Thank you Sanjay Gupta for honoring them. We NICU nurses are mighty protective of our charges. And while our primary clients are the wee ones, any NICU nurse knows that we are actually caring for the whole family. Way to go, my fellow nurses. You rock!

Next week our new NICU opens and a child who became the mascot or hero of the unit because she never understood how young she was and she didn't think she had any limits (and apparently, she didn't) is going to be there with her mom for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Oh, how I wish I could be there, not to see any ribbon cut, but to see this wonderful family again.

Please remember right now across the country many right to work initiatives are being implemented via ALEC... Milwaukee Co. NICU nurses are the best of the best. When my daughter was in NICU they took the best care of her. They interacted with stressed parents with kindness, love, concern and professionalism. They taught me all I needed to know to take care of my daughter and her issues, and they save the lives of littler and more sick babies that they were dealing with.

The doctors in the NICU are wonderful, but the nurses are extraordinary. Especially these nurses.
