An idea to start protecting students and teachers tomorrow...

Some won't like the idea of hardening schools but firearms ain't going anywhere for a long time...

You can get a nice big steel storm shelter that'll fit around 25 kids...

AR-15 resistant.

$10k a classroom. Bought by a District in bulk, probably half that. Not really that giant. Not sure if useful upstairs.

They can be moved into the room in sections and then welded together over a weekend.

it is profoundly disturbing that this is far more likely to be implemented than an actual ban and confiscation of of assault weapons

This would work... if the design of the school and class room worked.

Money can be found in the US for 'things' but is scarce for people.

If 3rd graders are all standing, shoulder to shoulder you can probably fit 20 in a space 8x8'

I don't like this option more than anyone else... but there WILL be another school shooting. There's NOTHING we can do to stop it.

So protect the kids and teachers.

But bring reality into play

ZERO gun legislation will become law... especially ANYTHING that might make a difference.

Even IF we got 51 votes... and the filibuster killed, The SCOTUS will reject it all, 100% that's reality. Hell... they even flipped California's 21 age requirement and took apart Californias Assault Weapons regulations...

So... protect the kids.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Tech_shooting

He killed 32 people armed with TWO Glock 19 9mm handguns.

He had a mix of 10 round and 15 round capacity magazines (10 round are the "low capacity" version)

The police responded within minutes of the shooting and killed him less than 15 minutes after the attack started.

It's necessary to PROTECT schools because

1) SCOTUS will block ANY gun legislation cuz Constitution.

2) Manchin, Sinema

3) EVEN IF a new Assault Weapons Ban went into effect, there are still handguns.

4) EVEN IF all guns were banned there are 350 million guns in the country.

If we don't rewrite the entire Constitution (my choice) then I can't imagine a path that gets rid of guns in the US in the next 50 years.

The Courts have taken a hard right turn the last decade.

CALIFORNIA!!!! got it's age 21 Law overturned by the Courts... and their Assault Weapons regulations were thrown out by a High Court and pending SCOTUS review...

AND their high capacity magazine law is tied up in Court, on it's way to SCOTUS.

The Clinton AWB wouldn't pass muster with THIS SCOTUS today.

Keeping schools unsecured is stupid. There is a serious problem with psychos and easy guns.

Protect our kids.

Don't get me wrong... with a magic wand I'd make every gun disappear. But that won't happen.

What you're talking about is a multi generation effort to change culture.

But it's not going to come from legislation unless we suddenly find ourselves with a 5-4 majority on SCOTUS.

And even then... there's the problem of 350 million guns ALREADY in circulation.

I DO NOT have the answer to the gun fetishists and murderers.

We're in a tough spot.

You say things like "winding down the culture"... what's that mean?

If you're talking about younger people being more anti-gun, then yes in a few decades there may be the rising tide capable of defeating the Constitution at the highest levels. We're clearly a broken society... incredibly violent. I think without guns these people would find other weapons. Guns just make it easy for them.

I'm VERY pessimistic... it's my inner misanthrope showing.
