"It will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada. In other words, we're capping the market for handguns," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says at a news conference in Ottawa as he outlines government's new gun control bill.

My father was born in Canada and never renounced that citizenship, living in US on a green card for most of his adult life. He died at age 58.

In 2009, Canada law changed to allow first generation born outside Canada to a born citizen of Canada the right of citizenship.

I finally applied, 18 months ago, just to have the certificate and honor my father.

18 months later, still no end in sight. I heard nothing for 14 months. Zip. Then finally a letter saying that my application was received. There are two more stages.

And that's for an applicant who is technically considered an automatic citizen!
